Prologue
The bond they shared was truly beautiful. He was like a newly formed sword, hot and smoldering, made whole by a douse in her water. The love they shared was not romantic, not poetic by any means; but it was beautiful nonetheless. They shared pieces of each other they wouldn’t share with anyone else, half-formed secrets passed from each pair of lips without hesitance.
Then came the complete and utter chaos, the turmoil that befell both lives. Her sister was dead, his mother was dead, and their brother (figurative for her) was dead as well. Their screams would echo off the silent corridors each night. She would quietly sob into her pillow, and he would always appear. Never had he failed her. Every night, they would clutch each other tightly, tears streaming; and eventually drift back into a more restful slumber, knowing the other was safe in their arms.
He would not dare leave her alone in this web of nightmares they had fallen together into.
Even as they began to slowly fade from their world into another, clutching the other’s hand firmly, she still held onto the hope that he would come to her aid, every night.
Even as she waved goodbye to her father, as her memories of this horrible life fled her mind, she held on to one, final memory: He would come, and he would make everything all right, as they had done for years.
Even as he kissed her forehead, murmuring his farewells, and she had stared blankly at those sky-blue eyes, she held onto to her memory. He would come. He would come.
Even as her eyes slid shut, into the realm of nightmares, her last conscious thought was, “He will come.”
Her shrieks sounded louder than ever before in the tiny house she now called home. And yet, even as the tears slid down her cheeks, he did not come. She wept all night, in the dark, cramped room she now called her own, and he still did not come.
Tiny rays of sunlight began to slowly stream into her bedroom.
It was then she let go of all hope, of all promises, of all secrets she ever shared.
It was then she lost all her memories of her life before.
