Lying on my side I open the bottom most drawer of the bedside table. Amidst all the forgotten stuff was the tennis ball; untouched since the day my Olivia breathed life back into this villa, old enough to compete with the seven wonders of the world.
"You remember the rule, don't you?" A voice whispers into my ear.
I was pretty sure I was alone.
"You know the rule. No playing catch in the house." She says with her goofy grin. She's wearing her same old tennis uniform, the blue a striking contrast with her amber coloured eyes, but the colour is just as much faded as the ball in the my palm of my hand.
"Since when did we start believing in rules?" I say and look up from my hand only to find nothing. All I'm left with is sound of my breathing in the vast expansive night.
"Merilyn 99 strikes. Derek still at zero." I sigh.
Thump! Thump! Thump!
The ball keeps going back and forth between my hand and the wall.
As kids we're told that we're stronger than the monsters under our bed, but tell me how many of us do really believe that? Each night when you go to bed how many times do you feel the urge to look under your bed with that flashlight you've had since you were five?
I'm gonna let you in a little secret.
There are no monsters under your bed.
They are on the bed sleeping freaking right beside you.
SMASH!
And there goes our house warming gift: The 1955 special edition wall clock made with finest ivory.
The ball falls limp over the glass crushing a few little pieces under its weight. The eerie sound of the breaking glass makes me instinctively touch my upper lip. My body shivers as the icy cold fingers touch the skin.
I move my hand around looking for my phone, I swear it was right here a minute ago.
"Aahh!" I jump outta my bed as I feel something move under my butt. "What the..." I totally did not pee a little to my phone vibrating under my butt.
"Get a grip" I sit against the edge of the bed.
With a sigh I get up and cross the room in a few long strides.
Pulling off my shirt I kick the bathroom door open; the lights switch on almost instantly and blind me for a second. I move towards the sink and lean forward to look at my reflection in the mirror. The stubble was now almost a full grown beard. Olivia isn't gonna like that. I look into my eyes, they're almost hazel coloured now. My maa tells me that I've inherited my father's green eyes, that sometimes she can almost see him in me, a splitting image of him.
My sister and I, we both have curly copper brown hair which have been dominant in our maternal family. We all literally have the same hair which refuse to be tamed. Girls in my college would fall flat for them but at the same time my sister has a closet full of hair product to tame her hair.
Which reminds me I haven't talked to her in a month.
I close the drain of the sink and open the tap to fill it up. I can see my face in the water as the sink fills up. The image is shaky, unstable, blurry as if painting a portrait of my present self. I notice the cut over my upper lip, it isn't healing as fast as I'd hoped for it.
I close the tap and hold the sides of the sink. Olivia says I'm a little too old for this. But I don't think so. This sink is like my little pensive, to look into the past, to see how I could have done things things differently, to store my memories when I can't breath with all the thoughts and memories cramping my head.
"I sometimes find, and I am sure you know the feeling, that I simply have too many thoughts and memories crammed into my mind."
I know this is far from what the real thing is but this is like therapy for me. A way for me to survive when I'm suffocating.
"Here I come,Mer" I say and plunge my face into the water.
