Walking through the snow covered grass, I looked at the park around me. The gentle breeze that ruffled the trees branches, the slow beating of bird's wings flying south for the winter. The cold ice dangling on the Evergreen's branches. The park looked like something from a fairytale. I let out the deep breath I was holding in, leaving a cloud of wonder in it's wake. I walked further untill I was was at the huge oak tree in the middle of the park. My heart instantly skipped a beat as I remembered why I was here.
Simon. The brown haired blue eyed guy I met at a coffee shop not to long ago. When our eyes made contact for the first time, I knew there was something about him. Something that drawn me to him. But his smile. That darn half smile of his is what made me go up to him and ask for his number. I usually wasn't so bold, but you know what they say. Love makes you do crazy things.
The thought of him send shivers down my spine, but that could just be the cold wind. I wrapped my arms around my body as I waited by the old oak tree. I couldn't help but smile at the memory. He was as surprised as I was at my bluntness, but he gave me his number nonetheless. I couldn't believe that it has been a year since that day. Now I couldn't imagine a life without him.
I really should've worn something warmer, I reminded myself. The thin jacket and skinny jeans I was wearing, did nothing to keep the cold chills at bay. The thick woolen socks I was wearing under my high heeled boots did help a little though.
Couples, children and old people seem to fly by me as the time ticked away. I've waited for atleast an hour and yet there was no sign of Simon. I let out a sigh and started walking back to my apartment. The cacophony of New York seem to drown out my sadness. He didn't come...
I was walking on the sidewalk with a slow but steady pace. I couldn't believe that he didn't show up. He is the one who mentioned it in the first place. Why did he bail out on me? Did he find someone new? Was he afraid to be with me? I let out another sigh as I passed a coffee shop full of people, the same one where Simon and I met for the first time. What is wrong with you Zillia? Why do you always have to fall in love with the wrong people ? My heart felt like it was bleeding.
I was walking past an alley way, when a terrifying scream stopped me in my tracks. I froze, terrified of what could be happening in that alley. I could run away and never think of this again. Or I could go help the person in need. Curiosity got the best of me, so I ventured futher into the dark alley. The green dumpsters stood against the alley walls, their lids fortunately closed. The clicking of my boots against the cold floor, seem to echo in the eerie silence. The alley looked empty, so I turned around. I was about to walk away, when I heard it again. This time the scream sound gurgled, like someone was choking on their own blood. I turned back around. Squinting my eyes at the darkness, searching for any kind of sign of where the sound might be coming from.
My eyes landed on a person's black suede shoe, not to far from where I was standing. I tentatively took a few steps closer untill I saw the blood...
A man's body layed on the ground, surrounded in crimson liquid. His blood covered face looked desperately at me. Warning me of something I didn't know. He tried saying something, but all that came out was more blood. Pouring out onto the pavement.
He was going to die.
I snapped out of my trance and kneeled down next to his soot and blood covered body. My hands flew around his body, searching for an open wound where all the blood was pouring out. That was when I noticed his neck. A grotesque bite mark placed where the main artery would be. The blood poured non-stop onto the pavement. What type of animal attacked this man? I placed my hands on his neck, vaguely trying to stop the bleeding. The blood slipped between my fingers, desperate to be free. I began to cry for this poor man's life. I couldn't help him. Maybe I should call the ambulance?
The thought slipped out of my mind as a cold shiver ran up my spine. I stood up and turned around, forgetting about the soon to be corpse beneath me. My green eyes met with a dark figure standing at the entrance of the alley way. The figure stood only a few feet away from me, but I could clearly see that it was a man. His stance ,broad shoulders and muscular figure giving it away. The man took a step closer. I took in a shocked breath as I saw his eyes. The colour of the liquid pouring out of the injured man's neck.
Blood red.
My breathing became rugged as I took a few steps back. Almost tripping over the still breathing body. "What are you doing here?" Said the deep menacing voice emanating from the man before me. My back hit the cold brick wall, as I staggered a few steps back. A deep animalistic growl escaped his throat as he slowly walked toward me. Like a predator stalking his prey. As he came closer, I got a view of his sharp canine like teeth glinting in the dull light. The sight only making my blood flow faster through my veins.
The man on the ground gurgled his last words before leaving this nightmare. "Run..." And so I did. I didn't look back as I ran like the hounds of hell were on my trail. The thump of my feet meeting the earth echoed through the alley. The harsh beating of my heart working in overdrive seemingly to fill my very being. I have to get away from here. I ran futher and futher. I didn't stop untill I got to my apartment building and into my own apartment locking the door behind me.
Numb...
I felt so numb.
I climed into the running shower and let the water cascade down my naked body. The clear water turning red from the blood, reminding me of what happened...
Falling onto my knees, I began to cry. How could this happen? Why did this happen? The man... I couldn't save him... His family will never see him again and it's all my fault. It wasn't untill the water was clear again that I stood up. There was one question in my mind that I knew was going to plague me forever...
"Who was the man with the blood red eyes?"
