"I'm sorry to tell you this, but... she's gone.".
The nurse looked down at her feet as if she was the guilty one. She doesn't even know.
My father nodded trying to keep it together but he fell apart quick. He broke into tears and sobs. He pulled me into him and hugged me like a kids stuffed animal. I started to cry and I nuzzled my face into his shirt balling my eyes out.
I'd never seen my father cry before. It hurt to see someone as strong as him break right before my eyes.
"She's go-gone" my dad spluttered out.
I could barely breath being so tightly held onto his chest and sobbing my heart out. I attempted a nod and my breath hitched. He loosened his grip to let me breath. My curly, fiery red hair was soaked in my father's tears.
The nurse turned and walked away, leaving us in our misery. After awhile my father took his shirt collar and dried the remaining tears on his face away. You could still see tears brimming in his eyes but he barely held them back. I was still clinging onto him for dear life. Crying. Hurting.
He had to lightly push me off of him. I curled up into a miserable ball and put my hood on. The knees of my Jean's got darker and darker as they became wetter and wetter with my tears.
My father stood up and walked over to moms hospital room. He walked in and started talking to the doctors and nurses. I was left in the hallway. Alone. Crying about my dead mother. This was officially the worst birthday present ever.
I felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked up to be greeted by a pair of beautiful light blue eyes. It was Andrew, my best and only friend. As soon as I looked up he attacked. He tightly wrapped his arms around my shoulders and I wrapped my arms around his waist. We both lightly sobbed. Andrew's mother was hovering behind him. She gave me a smile but she was obviously sad.
Andrew's family are great friends with my family so it hurt them as much as it hurt us for mom to be gone.
"Mom.. is.." I choked out.
"I know, I know." Andrew shushed me.
When dad walked back into the hallway he looked even sadder then before. He looked over to see me and Andrew crying into each other's shoulders in the middle of the hallway. He looked over at Andrew's mom and smiled a bit, tears still in his eyes. Andrew's mom smiled back.
She looked over at me and Andrew. "C'mon loves, let's get out of here and go somewhere nicer. We have a surprise for you two.".
Andrew and I wiped our tears and started to let go of eachother. Our parents started to walk down the hall towards the stairs, probobly talking about mom. How nice and sweet she was. How pretty and beautiful she was. How blessed they were to have someone like her in their lives. At least I hope they were. They better be.
Andrew jerked his head towards the direction of our parents. He was too mentally drained to speak. So was I so I just nodded. We both started to walk slowly towards our parents. We said nothing.
Out of nowhere he put his fingers in my palm, slowly moving them till his hand filled mine. I blushed but didnt say anything. I could tell he was surprised by his own move aswell.
This was nice.
My father turned around to look if we were behind him and Andrew quickly pulled his hand from mine and put it into the pocket of his jean's. My hand felt cold without his in it. I shoved my hand into the pocket of my hoodie, the hood of which I still had on. Dad looked at me and attempted a smile. I attempted one too. He turned away to talk to Andrew's mom again. Me and Andrew were back to an awkward silence.
"Andrew?" I croaked. My voice was scratchy and rough from crying.
He looked over at me and with facial expressions ask for me to continue.
"Can you hold something for me?"
He held out his hand.
I pulled my shaky one out of the pocket of my hoodie and lightly hovered it over his. Instead of dropping something into his hands, I put my hand into his.
I winked and dropped our intertwined hands in between us. His face was flushed and he was obviously shocked by my move. To be honest, I was aswell. He didnt protest. He just kept walking and looked forward with a dopey smile on his face. For some reason his reaction made my heart beat out of my chest.
We held each other's hand whenever our parents wernt looking. It was like a game and we were playing it well. We did that until we got into the car and started to drive away from that dreaded hospital. The pain was being numbed by me being with Andrew.
It was getting better.
