*Prologue*
"Ghosts don't exist" That's what I used to tell myself when I was younger. As far as I was concerned the only thing that went bump in the night was when my little sister fell out the bed ... That was until the night my life changed forever.
One night I found myself in a forest, no memory of what I was doing there or even how I got there, but nevertheless I was there, alone, and I was scared. Surrounded by trees, everywhere I went felt like I was walking in circles, until I came to a clearing. I looked around, breathless, at the far side of the clearing I saw a lifeless figure, swinging. Suddenly I heard footsteps coming. I wasn't alone anymore. The figure was gone, I spun around and there she was, running, like she was chasing something, or me.
As she came closer I could see the trees behind her, she wasn't invisible but she wasn't exactly solid either ... All I could think was that she was a ghost, but that couldn't be possible as I always told myself when I was younger, "Don't be scared, ghosts don't exist, if you hear a bump in the night, it's just your little sister falling out of bed". I ran. I was scared. It couldn't be a ghost, the footsteps kept coming closer, no matter how fast I ran I couldn't get away.
After some time I turned to look back. She wasn't there, I faced forward again and there she stood, I was no longer running away from her, I was running towards her. I stopped dead in my tracks. I sat down, gave up the chase, I was so tired all I wanted to do was sleep, so I closed my eyes, waiting to accept my fate in this twisted nightmare like life. I felt a rope drape around my neck. This was the end.
Ghosts do exist, and it makes them angry when you say they don't. They will come to get you, just like they got me. So be careful what you say or you might not live long enough to regret it. I'm Annie McConnell and this is my story.
