The sun rays started to seep into my room. I stand on the balcony as water drips from my wet hair. This day I have been dreading for almost two months has finally arrived. Today is the day that I will be getting engaged to a complete stranger whom I did not ever meet.
I always knew that I'd have to get married to the person that my parents would choose. But, I hoped that they would at least wait until I graduate, then a good job and a steady career.
My mom told me that the man they chose for me is well-settled, he is the CEO of some multinational company called Horizons and a successful one at that.
She says that I am lucky to be matched to a man who is not only wealthy but also very handsome and is not expecting anything in return from my parents. His family agreed for me to continue my education and were also happy to hear that I wanted to pursue a career.
I want to have a say in my life choices, to decide what to do further. But, I cannot see a future after this wedding as I would be stepping into unfamiliar territory and I don't know where it would take me.
I was lost in my thoughts as someone knocked on the door and my mom peeked inside "Nandu, the ceremony starts at 9 o'clock, you cannot stand in front of the mirror for so long. Hurry up!"
I sighed and started braiding my hair. After that, I put on all the ornaments that my mom gave me and also some flowers in my hair. I looked at myself one last time; there is minimal make-up on my face as I was never a fan of make-up. The ornaments are in right place.
My favorite thing about this whole ordeal is my saree. I am wearing a kanjivaram saree with a red and orange hue. It is so soft and it looked like royalty and complimented my skin tone.
I left my room and sat on the sofa in the living room looking at all the people roaming around in a hurry to set up the place for my engagement ceremony. The clock struck 8:30 and someone from outside informed me that the groom's family is there.
I didn't get up from the sofa as I am too nervous. My in-law's family entered came inside. My mom ushered me to them as I needed to take their blessings. I could only see my mother-in-law and father-in-law standing.
"Where are your children?" my mom asked. "Ah! Manki said that he wants to come in his own car, so we started a little early, and Preethi didn't want to leave her brother" my mother-in-law said chuckling.
I only met this couple but did not get to see the family as a whole ever. I only know the name of my supposed fiancée Manik who is known as a young successful billionaire according to the tabloids.
And my friends gushed over him non-stop and told me that that I was a lucky person to get tied to that sexy hunk! Whatever, I thought.
Everyone sat in the living room where the ceremony is going to be held and I don't know why but my heart was thumping so hard and I could feel the blood pumping to my head.
"Ma, I need some water," I informed and got up to go to the kitchen. I drank some water and was about to turn and go into the living room, but collided with a chest clad in an Armani suit.
I had to lift my head to see who it was as the person was very much taller than I am. As soon as I look at the man a soft gasp left my lips.
The man standing in front of me is the epitome of sexiness. He had a smirk on his face as he leaned towards me and breathed in my ear, "so, you are my bride, huh?" his voice was very sexy that a shiver ran down my spine hearing it.
I just gave a little nod as my brain stopped functioning. He tugged me towards his chest by my waist, my eyes widened and I gasped again.
"I just wanted to touch you, couldn't stop myself," he said and leaned towards my ear and whispered, "how about we skip this whole engagement thing and get married, right now?" in that sexy voice of his. I squirmed in his grip as his voice was creating some serious butterflies in my stomach.
"Manik, why are you taking so long to get a glass of water?" A voice came from behind me and a girl wearing a light pink dress came into my view and I must say she is beautiful.
He left me at once and looked at the girl. I think these people have beauty in their genes. The girl gave me a mean stare and I could say that she did not like me at all.
"Come on, let's go," he ushered us into the living room. We sat with our parents on both sides and the ceremony started.
I glanced in his direction and he winked at me. I looked away and concentrated on the priest chanting mantras.
What have I gotten myself into, I panicked.
