Prologue
When I was five years old my mother gave me a locket. It was quite a simple design. The silver was faded and worn down, and inside was a quote. “Humans are amphibians- half spirit and half animal. As spirits they belong to the eternal world, but as animals they inhabit time.” -C.S. Lewis.
I inhabited time much more than I belonged to the eternal world. This was because I was more animal than spirit. Of course I had a spirit, it is what made me live. However, I was not fully spirit. I was alive.
However, I knew of those who were full spirit. They had no animal in them. They were dead.
See, my mother gave me this locket as a message. She knew I would have a spirit as a friend. Everyone in my very scant family did. Having a spirit as a friend was amazing. They opened your eyes to things you would never see otherwise. They were fiercely loyal and admirable protectors, despite their ethereal form. They gave their friends wealth and knowledge beyond any.
And that is why it was so dangerous to have a spirit friend. If a person had a spirit friend, they were called a Spiorad. I was a Spiorad. My mother was a Spiorad. Her father was a Spiorad. It went all the way back to the beginning. We were a thriving race, our spirits guiding us to better lives.
All that ended when the Laoch started to hunt us. They didn’t have spirits to guide them to greatness, and they were beyond jealous. They burned with their envy, so much so that it became their goal as a race to exterminate all the Spiorad.
So, my mother left me in the care of an ordinary family, trying to hide my heritage. The only thing she left behind was a locket, which I had spent all my time trying to decipher the meaning of. After all, somehow this locket had to do something big. Because I didn’t have a spirit. And for a Spiorad that was impossible.
