The trio of kids stood in her house, kind of awkward. They were all related though none of them looked it. Their parents had died and this woman was supposed to be their adopted mother. One was a tall boy of about sixteen with curly red hair, bright blue eyes, and pale skin. He wore all black and, even though it was the middle of summer, long pants. The other boy was about a year younger with long (for a boy), jet black hair, grayish eyes, and darker skin. He was wearing a red t-shirt and jean shorts. Then there was a short girl that was dark haired boy's twin. She had long blond hair that was pulled back into a ponytail, brown eyes, and lightly tanned skin. She was also wearing jean shorts but a green and blue tie-dyed shirt. The only thing that was the same between them was a secretive look they all shared.
The woman turned to look at them as they had all stopped near the doorway. "I will show you guys to your room," she said, smiling kindly. She had agreed to take these children even though she very well knew that they were considered problem children. She led the way down the hallway, the three slowly following behind them. She stopped in front of the first door. "Zuri, this is your room. I did the best I could decorating, so I hope your rooms look ok," she said.
Zuri entered the room to find it was a mix of light purple, light blue, and yellow. The girl smiled slightly at the woman in the doorway. "It looks nice," she said, smiling slightly. The colors worked well together. "Thank you."
The next room they went to was Hazley's. The older boy opened the door to find a mix of the darker colors, unlike his sister's room. It was not completely gothic but had the touch of gothic-ness it needed, like black curtains but dark blue walls. "Perfect. Thanks," he said, smirk/smiling at the woman.
Then they came to Daray's room. The black haired boy wasn't sure what to expect. What he found was a nice bright green and blue room. There was a book shelf and other stuff to help try and keep him organized. His sibling sometimes joked his name was a shortened version of the word 'disarray.' "This is awesome. Thanks," he said, nodding as he looked around at the room.
The woman looked happy about there responses to her decorating. They had all been asked to call her 'mom' so they didn't know her real name or anything else about her. All she knew about them was their names and a few select other things. One of those was what made them 'problem' children. The oldest refused to get up in the day time which made it hard for school, the other boy disappeared once a month no matter what, and the girl was known for being around when strange things happened. She could barely believe the three children were related.
She turned away from their rooms, letting them start to get comfortable. She walked towards the kitchen to fix them some dinner. The kitchen had yellow tile floors and light brown wooden cabinets with light yellow counter tops. She moved towards the stove, stirring a pot of jambalaya. "Dinner's almost ready!" she called over her shoulder at the children.
Daray walked into his brother's room to see him looking really hungry in a different way. "No eating it yet. We just got here and I don't feel like leaving, yet," he said, folding his arms across his chest as he leaned against a door. "Are you going to come join us for dinner?"
Hazley glared at him. "Shut up, Disarray," he muttered, walking past his younger brother and out the door. He hit Zuri's door as he walked by. "Dinner," he called as the door opened on his sisters room to show her reading on her bed. It was Dracula. Wasn't that ironic.
Zuri about jumped out of her skin. "Will you not do that? You are so dang sneaky!" she said, sticking her tongue at her older brother and got up to go to the kitchen to eat. 'Yum, jambalaya,' she thought, smelling the air and catching a whiff of it in the air. It amazed her that Hazley had decided to eat with them.
Daray was the last one out for dinner, which was unusual because he had the best appetite in the family. He was the first one to the table, though. Zuri was close behind and Hazley just kind of lingered near it, not sure if he wanted to eat or not.
"Sit down! Sit down!" the woman said to the red head, setting the pot of jambalaya on the table. She noticed that the twins were fighting over the ladle to get there food and the older one looked like he was used to it and not eating much either. Maybe they were related.
Hazley sat down awkwardly and took the ladle from both of the two. "Calm down," he said, grimacing at them. He put some of it into his bowl and then handed it to the woman. "You might want to get some first or they will eat it all."
The twins rolled their eyes as they waited to get the ladle passed their way. They each filled their bowls, both gulping it down. Nobody really talked except for asking for more food or drink. Hazley was done first while the twins were seeing who could eat more. It was amazing the two were not overweight.
The woman took away the pot as it was gone. "I think you guys have had enough. You are going to puke if you eat much more," she said, smiling slightly. "Now you can go unpack and be sure you are ready for school on Monday." She saw Hazley look kind of worried. "What's making you make that face, Hazley?"
Hazley bit his lip. "I can't really go to school. I can't manage to get up during the day, ever," he said, even though that was not a decent reason. He knew he would have to make something up. "I'm allergic to the sun so it is impossible for me to go outside during the day. Besides, I have already finished the curriculum through the end of high school." His eyes shifted from place to place, nervous.
The woman nodded. "Well then, you can do online classes or something on the computer," she said, already knowing this. She smiled at three children. She waved her hands, shooing them away to their rooms.
They all got up, and walked away glancing at each other nervously. "We are going to have issues on Monday," Daray whispered to Zuri who nodded her agreement.
Zuri glanced at Hazley. "If you need to go out, we will set up your room so you won't be missed but wait till around midnight," she whispered to her other brother, knowing he might need to go out and get some better 'food.' He did that almost every night but was seldom caught because of his siblings.
Hazley smirked. "I ate before we came. I should be ok until tomorrow. If not, I have been sneaking out long before you guys knew about it," he said, smiling in a devious way. To anyone else that comment wouldn't make sense.
The twin laughed quietly, knowing how true it was. They split up to head to their rooms. Zuri read some more Dracula, not liking the books with elves. Hazley was standing by the window, watching the few people walk by in the darkness, hurrying from place to place. Daray was lying on his bed, watching TV show about the history of wolves. All was quiet, for the moment.
