It was mid-fall and nearing Halloween, your favorite time of year. As usual, your friend Brendon was planning his annual party and you agreed to help him. The two of you sat in his basement, he with pumpkins in each hand, and you with a pad of paper. "C'mon, (y/n), where do you think I should put these?" Brendon asked you, nodding to the pumpkins in his hands. The party was tomorrow night, and Brendon and you weren't even close to being done decorating.

"Um.. How about over by the basement stairs? One on each side?" You answer him, taking one of the carved pumpkins from him. You set in down by the side of the stairs and he sets down the other. The both of you take a step back to admire the decor, and agree to keep them there. You pick back up the notepad and cross off 'pumpkins'. You scan the long list, then walk over to where Brendon was by the stairs again, placing tea light candles inside the pumpkins. "Bren, we still have to get candy, and apples for bobbing, and some games or something. Geez, why'd we ever wait this long to start all of this?" You sigh and toss down the pad of paper and your pen.

"Because we suck and we procrastinate." He replied with a smile. "C'mon, let's go out and get the candy. We could put in on that table over there." He gestures to a small coffee table over by a sofa. You nod, and you both hop up the stairs to the main level of Brendon's house.

Once up there, you ask Brendon, "You have the list of guests finished, right? We should send out texts to remind everyone about the time and stuff later."

"Yeah, yeah, I did it. Geez, when did you become my mom?" Brendon laughs, tossing on his jacket. You sigh and roll your eyes, pushing him teasingly, and grab your jacket, then the two of you head out to get the remaining items.

The next day, the day of the party, you arrive early to Brendon's house. Hopping out of your car, you can barely contain your excitement. You have your costume in your bag - you're being Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Brendon said his was a surprise. Last year he was a vampire. What a dork, you think, and ring the doorbell. You hear shuffling from the inside, and his mother opens the door. "(Y/n)! How are you?" She asks you, and you chat with her for a moment before Brendon comes out of his bedroom, his hair a mess.

He yawns and walks to the kitchen. You follow. "Just wake up, huh? You excited?!" You ask, opening up his fridge and grabbing a Capri Sun.

"Yes and yes." He answers, pouring himself a bowl of cereal. "You have your costume and everything, right?" He sits down at the table and starts eating.

"Yep! When are you going to tell me what you're going to be?" You reply, showing him your bag with the dress in it, and take a seat beside him.

"Fine, fine. I'm gonna be the Mad Hatter. Is that cool?" He laughs and raises an eyebrow.

"Sounds great." You answer.

The two of you spend the rest of the day doing last minute preparing. You make some adjustments to the decorations and tidy up the house. Then the two of you get your costumes ready.

You do your face makeup subtly, with some blue eyeshadow, eyeliner, and lipstick. You didn't want to go so over the top for the party. Once you're done, you help Brendon tie his bow tie and that's when people start arriving.

Among the guests are Brendon's best friends Jon, Spencer, Dallon, and Ryan, your crush. You feel your heart start beating faster when you see him and your hands begin to sweat. Ryan was vampire this time, using Brendon's costume from last year. You all go down to the basement and Brendon's mother leaves the house to give everyone privacy.

The party is going great and everyone is having fun. You guys played games like bobbing for apples, which only resulted in makeup being washed off, the floor getting wet, and people getting frustrated. You were lucky enough to get an apple on your fourth try.
