I woke to the sun shining through my curtains. My hand reached for my phone and I checked the time; 9:46. I need to get my mind off things so I grab my blue adidas leotard and black short-shorts. I put my hair in a ponytail and slip a pair of flipflops on. I grab my gymnastics bag and head down stairs with my phone in hand.
My eyes search the fridge and I decide on strawberries. When I finish eating, I grab a piece of paper and leave a note;
Going to the gym, if you need me just call or text
-Payton
"Ryan can you drive me to gymnastics?" I called.
He nodded and grabbed the keys. We sang along to songs in the car, it was fun and got my mind off things. The Black SUV shock a little as we pulled into the gravely parking lot.
"Thanks for the ride" I said and grabbed my bag and phone while shutting the front seats door.
I walked over to the heavy glass doors and pulled, to get blasted by the cool air.
"Morning Rachel!" I said to the middle aged women behind the front desk.
"Good morning Payton, how are you?" She asked glancing down.
"Okay... What do you mean?"
She nervously glanced down again and picked up a People Magazine with the pictures from last night plastered across the front.
Payton Levine: troubled teen?
I rolled my eyes.
"Rach don't listen to them, please." I grabbed the magazine and walked back into the den. I placed my bag on the bench and sat down. My flipflops slide off my feet as I stared at the magazine, like it was daring me to read it. After awhile I shoved it in my bag and walked out the door into the gym. I headed for the beam, which is where I went when I was frustrated.
I climbed up and stared down at the thin piece of wood covered in fabric. Inhaling and exhaling I placed my foot In front of the other and started off with a simple front tuck, and then rewinding myself in a back tuck, back aerial.
After warning myself up, I practiced a couple side aerials on the beam, which I had mastered years ago. I also did a double back handspring back layout.
My feet pounded on the beam, landing without a single wobble. I always seemed to focus better when I had something on my mind, which is ironic, but it works.
"Payton!" I heard the small voice shout from across the room.
"Hey sky!" I replied hopping off the beam.
"Ready for your lesson?" I asked. She nodded, excited to learn. I looked up to wave to Elizabeth, her mom, but someone at her side caught my eye.
