" oh Bronwyn~ you are so like your mother. Full of hate"
Ugh!! Why is this so hard.
I've always had a decent relationship with my father. He goes to work in a pissed off mood, and I go to school. He comes home from work and we chat a little until he becomes irritable.
That's how it was... I thought it was normal.
Until my parents decided to split up. More like mom found out he was sleeping with the secretary and told him to leave. After that I barely saw him. He always had an excuse. " I'm busy, I'm going to a party, I don't want to deal with you this weekend." Still I figured it was normal.
As time passed I hadn't seen or spoken to my father in over 2 years.
Life was great!

.
Until mom got sick. Really sick.
It all happened too fast. It felt like my whole world was crashing around me and I could do absolutely nothing about it.
I was sitting outside the hospital room that used to belong to my mother, alone waiting for my father to pick me up. As he is the only one I had left. Sadly. It took about 3 hours but he finally arrived.
"Get in the car. We'll pass by the house. You have 20 minutes to put everything you need into suitcases we're moving. "
Okay so no " hi long time no see, how are you"
I wasn't shocked at this point. I just nodded solemnly and followed behind him.
As we arrived at my house I dashed out of the car ran up to my bedroom and opened 2 suitcases quickly packing all of my clothes, makeup, hair tools, electronics and chargers and shoes into two suitcases since I still had some time I walked into my mothers bedroom and looked around for things that reminded me of her. I passed by picture frames of us together when I was younger
And selfies we had taken together. My mother was practically my best friend I told her everything and now she's gone. I caressed her face in the picture frame and turned to the closet. She had a whole collection of scarves. They were beautiful but I never wore them. I wanted one because she treasured them so dearly and they still smelled like her. I chose my favourite coloured one and wrapped it around my wrist. I also took her pillow from her bed and her favourite perfume bottle.
Quickly stashing those away in my other suit case I ran outside to the sound of my father honking the horn looking annoyed as if someone had forgotten to put the dipping sauce with his order of chicken nuggets.
Placing my things in the trunk. And going back to my place in the passenger seat. Plugging in my earphones and attempting to drown out all my problems with music. I looked up at my father. His face had aged quite a bit in the last 2 years. He had grey hair peppering his dark brown short curls. The freckles on his face more prominent on his mocha skin more than before.
Looking back to my lap I thought about my childhood. I'm a mixed child. My mother was white And my dad is black. I never understood why I didn't really look like him though other than my nose, freckles and crazy curls when not straightened. I wasn't the least bit tanned at all, Heck I was practically transparent. It was a running joke in the family that I just wasn't cooked long enough.I remember people from my class asking if I was adopted when it was the day when your parents would come and talk about their work. It never clicked In my head that we looked different I've always seen the resemblances. But to others I was just the spitting image of my now dead mother. And I don't think my father is going to let me live it down.
I looked out my window to see the outskirts of the city that I had spent most of my life in for the last time or at least a long time.
Hopefully this move will give me a chance to restart and make the best of things. And maybe bring out the best of me
