“Aren’t you going to get in?” Keegan yelled from the water at the bottom of the dock he had just jumped from.

“No way, that water has got to be freezing! It’s only April, it hasn’t had time to warm up yet.” I yelled back down to him.

“So? I could keep you warm!” He yelled next.

“I am not getting in; you might as well stop trying to convince me.”

“Fine, be that way.” He said.

I couldn’t help but think that he gave up way to easily. He never gives in to an argument until he wins. He was swimming his way back to the sandy beach. I knew the water wasn’t cold, it’s April and we are in Santa Monica, California. I just wasn’t about to jump in the water from up here. The dock was at least fifty feet from the top of the water. Keegan knows I am afraid of heights but he says 'fear just holds you back from having fun'. It’s practically his life motto.

He walked down the dock and came and sat beside me where my feet were dangling over the edge, my blonde hair blowing with the breeze coming off the ocean.

Keegan and I are both morning people so we always wake up early and come down to the dock. There are hardly ever people on the dock this early. If anyone is at the beach they are usually jogging or bike riding for their morning exercise and what not.

“Why won’t you just jump in with me, Elena?” Keegan whined.

“You know why, Keegan.” I stated matter-o-factly.

“Oh, come on. Your fear of heights is hol-“

“Holding me back from having fun,” I cut him off. “Yeah, I know. You always say that.”

He smiled. “You know me so well.”

“Yeah, well it’s kind of hard not to know you since we’ve been best friends since, well, forever.” I said back.

“The neighbor, best friend and the boyfriend, that’s me.” He said with a triumphant grin.

I laughed slightly and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

“Hey, let me see your sunglasses real quick,” Keegan said after a few seconds of silence.

“Uh, why?” I asked skeptically.

He didn’t answer me he just grabbed my ray bans from off of my face and put them with his t-shirt off to the side. He stood up and grabbed my hands and pulled me up, too. Before I knew what was going on, he jumped off the side of the dock, pulling me off with him. I screamed all the way down to the water before I was hushed by the water covering my mouth so I had to close it to keep what little air I had left. When Keegan and I finally resurfaced, I glared at him.

“See? It was holding you back from having fun,” He said as he grabbed the sides of my face and planted a kiss on my lips. I kissed him back giving up on acting as if I was actually mad at him.

“Oh, shut up.” I said, as I splashed water in his face.

“Hey! That’s not nice!” Keegan said as he put on his ‘angry’ face. He looked even cuter when he was mad. His brown hair was falling over his forehead from the water holding it down.

“What wasn’t nice?” I asked innocently, but couldn’t contain the smirk that took over my face.

“You know what,” He started. “And I’ll get you back for it, too.”

My eyes widened a fraction before I contained my face. He’s bluffing. “You won’t do a thing.” I said smiling, but that smile was quickly erased from my face as he put his hands on my shoulders and dunked us both under the water. He didn’t let go of me, though. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me closer to him. I wrapped my legs around his waist and waited until we resurfaced from the water.

“You’re a meanie, you know that?” I said to him.

“Yeah, I know I am. But you love me anyways.” He countered. I nodded and gave him a little kiss on the tip of his nose.  He smiled and started swimming away from me.

“Wait, where are you going?” I yelled to the back of his head.

“I’m jumping in again,” He said, swimming back to the beach.

“Wait for me!”

I hurried and swam back to the beach and met him at the front of the dock. We ran, hand in hand, all the way down the dock and jumped. We were still hand in hand when we resurfaced. Once I got a good breath of air I burst out laughing. He looked at me skeptically and then laughed, too. He always said I had one of those contagious laughs.

“What’s so funny?” He asked.

“I can’t believe I was scared to jump.” I said through my laughter.

He smiled, “Come on. We probably should head back to the house soon,”

“I finally jumped off the dock and now we have to go home? No fair.” I pouted.

“You’re cute when you pout, you know that?” He whispered to me.

I blushed but tried to hide it. Instead, I scoffed. “Pssh, doubt it.”

“I saw you blush, silly.” He told me. I quickly put my hands over my cheeks.

“Did not!” I yelled and went under the water so my blush would go away.

When I resurfaced he was smirking at me. “Oh, shut up.” I said and turned to swim back to shore.

“I didn’t say anything.” He said, laughing.

“Yeah, well you were going to.” I muttered.

When we got back to the shore he grabbed my hand and we walked back to where his shirt and my sunglasses were.

“Crap, I forgot a towel.” I said under my breath as I put my ray bans back on.

“Here,” Keegan said, pulling his blue v-neck over my head. I smiled pulled him into a hug, kissing him as a thank you. He wrapped his arm around my waist and rested his hand on the small of my back as we walked back to our houses.
