I pushed myself onto my elbows as I heard someone knocking on my bedroom door,
"Who is it?" I called out as I dog eared the page of my book.  My brother, Jackson, poked his head in,
"Hey, um, Mom wanted me to come tell you there's something in the mail for you, and dinners almost done."  His hazel eyes avoided looking at me and kept staring at his feet causing his hair to fall in front of his face.  I fully sat up on my bed, my heart beginning to beat faster after hearing his words. I nodded and gave a small smile,
"Thanks, I'll be down in a minute." I said as he disappeared and closed the door behind him.  I stood up and adjusted my plain black T-Shirt in an effortless attempt to smooth out any wrinkles I had. "Oh God...What if this is it?" I thought to myself and I opened my bedroom door, closing it behind me as I made my way down the short hallway and down the stairs. I walked down slowly, my hand resting on the banister for a moment as I reached the bottom, turning I walked into the kitchen and plopped down onto a barstool that faced the counter space in which my mom was working on. She glanced up and smiled at me,
"Hey kiddo, you hungry yet? I'm making your favorite. And your dad's grilling something outside." I nodded as I smiled back.
"Starving," I said. "So, Jackson told me there was something in the mail for me?" I asked as I walked to the kitchen cabinet and started grabbing enough plates and glasses for dinner.
"Oh yeah!  I almost completely forgot." She motioned over to a small table that was where we sorta just threw our keys and whatever else we deemed important that day.  I walked over and started flipping through the mail until I found a large envelope with my name on it.  I walked back to my chair with it, "Is it from the job that you wanted?" My mom asked after I sat down and just stared at it.
"Yeah, It is." I responded.  "Should I open it? I mean what if I didn't get in, I'm really young and fresh out of school." I looked at her, nerves finally getting the best of me. She looked up at me as I finished, while wiping off her hands.
"Honey, there is no way that they wouldn't give you this position even with how young you are.  It would be absolutely ludicrous, your both smart and beautiful not to mention one of the most hardworking people your age I know.  And on the rarest chance that they do give it to someone else," She walked around to rest her hand on my back and she forced me to look in her eyes. "Your father and I are so proud at the person you've become.  Although you got somethings from us, like you got the brains and the beauty from me," I chuckled when she said that." You are your own person and I am absolutely amazed at how hard you've pushed yourself and what you've accomplished is just a short time.  And not to pick favorites but your my favorite child." She said as she wrapped her arms around me for a brief hug. I smiled again and hugged her back, the lump in my throat significantly smaller.
"Hey! What about me? I thought parents didn't have favorites?" Jackson said as he walked into the kitchen and stood across from us, giving me the evil eye as a smile hinted in his lips.
"Your right honey, parents don't have favorites. We just say we do sometimes." She patted his back as she gently pushed his away from her working station and continued chopping up garlic for dinner. "Well, Elizabeth, are you gonna open in?" She said as I looked between her and the envelope that help the answer to part of my future.
"Yeah of course." I hesitated for a moment but then opened up the package, pulling out the contents which was what looked like a few sheets of paper carefully folded over its self. I took a deep breath and looked at my mom and brother, who both gave a nod of encouragement, before I opened the letter my eyes scanning the first couple sentences. I couldn't believe it. "Oh my God." I breathed out.
"What?" My mom voices her concern. "Did you get it?" Jackson came over to stand next to me, snatching the letter from my hand.
"Oh fuck yeah she got in!!" He shouted as my mom broke into a huge grin.
"Oh honey! I'm so proud of you! I knew you could do it" She rushed over and wrapped her arms around Jackson and me. "And language Jackson Ethan Haynes. I have to go tell your father, we're celebrating tonight!" She exclaimed as she let go of us and rushed out back to get my dad. Jackson let go of me and looked at me.
"I'm proud of you to sis," I smiled at his words. "But does this mean I get your room?" My face fell flat as I stared at him in disbelief. He gave a cheeky grin and laughed. "Shit you know I'm just joking around." I lightly punched his upper arm as I remarked. "I know, but like hell your getting my room asshole." He grinned at my remark and walked out the room while giving me the bird. I chuckled and looked down again at the letter and smiled.
