*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Grace stood outside Waterloo Road school. She knew she didn't want to be there but she needed a job. She knew who worked there too. Simon Lowsley. The man who fathered her precious baby girl Lilly-Rose. He walked away before Lilly had been born though.

Thankfully, Lilly hadn't gone without a father as not long after her birth, Grace met Max Tyler. He had stepped up and been there for both Grace and Lilly. For that, Grace was grateful.

Grace walked into the building. Max was at home with Lilly as she wasn't feeling too well. Grace made her way to the office. "Hi. I've got an interview with a Christine Mulgrew," she said.

"Take a seat. She and the deputy head will be out shortly," the PA said.

Grace sat down and sighed. She got a text from Max.

Lilly's asleep. Good luck baby. We love you - Max xx

Grace smiled.

The door opened and out came Christine. "Grace, come in."

***
Grace walked into the office. Sitting there was Simon Lowsley. The man who had fathered Lilly. Grace tried to ignore him. But she couldn't avoid the look on his face. The look of utter shock.

Christine smiled. "Welcome to Waterloo Road school. I'm the headteacher and this is-"

"Simon Lowsley. Deputy head. Absolute wanker," Grace spat.

Christine frowned. She looked at Grace. "What?"

"This man. He knocked me up. When I told him about our baby, he did a runner. Left me alone and pregnant," Grace said.

Christine was shocked. She looked at Simon.  She couldn't believe he had the nerve to criticise her.

***
Grace walked around the school with Christine. Simon tagged behind. He felt guilty. Christine walked into a classroom. Simon looked at her. "Did you keep it?"

Grace looked at him. "Yes I kept it. We had a daughter. Her name is Lilly-Rose. She's two. I gave her your last name. More fool me," she said.

Simon sighed. "I'd like to see her. Please?"

Grace shook her head. "No. Not yet. It will confuse her. She doesn't need any confusion right now. She's not feeling too well," she told him.

"What's wrong?"

"She has a chest infection. She's with my fiancé right now," Grace said.

Simon sighed and nodded. He wanted to see his daughter. He looked at Grace. "You dyed your hair?"

"Yeah."

***
Grace went into the staff room. Simon walked in. "Everyone. This is Grace Davis. She's our new English teacher," he announced.

A girl walked over. "Hi. I'm Charley."

"Grace."

Simon paled and walked over. He stood by Charley. Grace smiled. "I'm guessing he didn't tell you about the fact he abandoned me when I was pregnant? His daughter is now two years old."

Charley was shocked. She couldn't believe Simon had never told her that. She felt betrayed by him.

***
Grace went back home. Max smiled. "Hey."

"Hey. How's she been?" Grace asked as she kissed Lilly's head. She smiled down at her.

Max smiled. "She's been good. She's slept the whole day."

Grace smiled. If only she knew how much her life was going to change. Especially now Simon was back in her life. She didn't love him.

But she couldn't lose her daughter to him.
