Deep in the depths of the ocean where no light shines through the murk and the water pressure is high enough to crush a human skull like a soda can lurk mysterious bioluminescent creatures. From angler fish to vampire squids these monstrous animals elude the human race with their strange anatomy. One such creature is the Mermaid, an creature up until now we regarded as myth.

When you were young you heard legends of Mermaids. Back in the age of sailing it was considered bad luck to have a woman on the boat. Any girl unfortunate enough to set foot on a ship would be tossed over the edge to drown as the crew watched her struggle, heaving against the waves until she finally sunk. Many old records tell that as the woman tried to take her final breath she screamed as her legs locked together into a slim tail and her fingers hooked into claws and webbing. Her eyes stung and in a flash of blue she could breath once more, but every inhale was agony as salt flew into her newly formed gills. Alleged survivors tell of the very same girls leading the crew that put her through this transformation to a gruesome death beneath the waves for what they did to them.

Of course these were nothing more than myths. Simple stories people tell to pass the time. Mermaids are a completely different species than humans. They are but animals with a humanoid appearance that create high-pitched frequencies to lure other fish into their grasp. It is merely a coincidence that the mermaids will occasionally target humans with their hypnotic squeals. From what research has shown mermaids are not even close to the level of sentences a human.

Or so you thought.

Dear summer interns,

My name is Jane Enquire. You may know me as the founder of the Sirensong Aquatic Rehabilitation Center. As I am sure you know by receiving this letter your application to the facilities exclusive summer intern program has been accepted.  You are to come at 11:00 AM sharp tomorrow morning, where my niece Persephone will show you around the facility. Come with a packed suitcase, as you will be staying with us for the entire summer. You will be sorted into groups to make it easier to assign the daily duties, such as cutting fish to give to the mermaids, giving tours to the public, assisting the janitor with his cleaning and manning the phones in case of an emergency search and rescue. We at SSARC take pride in the freedom we allow our summer interns. You are allowed to do almost anything you wish after you have completed your daily tasks, except for a few acceptations.

1) Males may not visit the female cabins after the 9:35 PM curfew and vice versa. Failure to follow this rule will suspend your pay for three weeks.

2) No destruction to the property or the costs of replacement equipment will be coming out of your pay.

3) Be respectful to our loyal staff members and the other interns. Punishment for not doing so will vary depending on the severity of the incident.

4) Remain as quiet as possible after curfew, as this is the time where I get very important paperwork done.

5) Finally our most severe rule. NEVER under any circumstances visit the animal enclosures without a staff member. These are very rare and dangerous creatures to only be handled by a professional. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS RULE WILL LEAD TO EXPULSION FROM THE PROGRAM AND A $500 FINE.

We hope you will enjoy your summer at the Sirensong Aquatic Rehabilatation Center!

Sincerely, Jane M. Enquire.
