“How’d it go?” Daphne asked, more curious than before class.
“Alright. Well, they made out which bugged the total crap out of me at first. Once they were told to stop, Haley turned and started talking to me and asking me who the boy was. I was lucky enough Ms.Applegate interrupted, but she still wants to talk later so I don’t know what to do.” I complained. Daphne just looked at me, and shook her head. “What”
“You’re gonna have to tell her soon.” Right as she said that, I saw Nate and for once he was by himself and I just had the most interesting feeling shiver up my spine. Such a different and odd feeling that I’ve never had before, but something inside me was shouting he likes you too. Which made me think, does he really? I shook my head at Daphne, maybe he would end it sooner than I thought. But that little voice inside my head is probably just my feelings for him talking. After the beginning of our last class, I don’t see them ending it at all.

“Nate is so gorgeous, whoever you’re crushing on better be somewhat cuter. But nothing is better than my Naty nate.” She overused that nickname, and I’m sure Nate was suffering just by hearing it. By a stroke of luck, Nate had to work on something during on lunch so it was us three girls. “So spill, who’s the guy?” I looked down at my untied shoelace like it was my savior and bent down to tie it.
“Random shoe tieing. I think she’s avoiding the question at hand.” I whipped my head up, to see Nate sitting close to Haley. Perfect. I nervously laughed, and rubbed my aching head.
“I’m not, I just rather not say. Maybe I’ll share if it actually, works out.” I doubted my words, because Nate and I would never work out.
“Cmon, we love secrets.” Nathan leaned in, close to my face. He always acted like one of us, but obviously more manly. I stared in his eyes, and I clearly noticed his sea blue eyes - waves crashing around the pupil and making them stand out like no other eyes. I noticed he stared for a good amount of time, and we were pulled out of our trance when Daphne cleared her throat. She stared at me, and mouthed ‘what was that?’ With her eyebrows raised high on her forehead. I shrugged my shoulders, I had no idea.
“Well this was boring, we didn’t find out what we wanted to. You will tell us soon Ally, no matter if I have to make your drunk to do it.” She stood, smoothing out her skirt. Nate kept his eyes on and around me at her mention of my past - he knew it hurt.
--
“I’m sorry she mentioned that. I think our long gaze into each others eyes bothered her a bit.” Nate said, as he held onto my locker door.
“Ya think?” I joked, trying to recover from earlier.
“Wanna hangout after school?” Nate surprised me with his question.
“Uh, I don’t think Haley will like that.” My hands began to sweat, and my head pounded.
“Don’t worry Ally, we’re just going to hangout. Like the old days.” He smiled widely at me, and with his swift movement of his hands connecting with mine - calmed me down. I sighed, and couldn’t help but blush at the ground.
“Nathan!” Haley screeched, and he squeezed my hand hard. “What the hell are you doing holding Ally’s hand?” He finally released the grip, and shrugged his shoulders.
“We are over! Ally, how could you be such a bitch.” She said so naturally, like she had practiced it.
“Baby, I was just calming her down after what you said. Bringing up someone’s past isn’t the friendliest thing to do.” He raised his voice at her, which was the first time I had actually seen them fight. It seemed like it wasn't going to escalate as much as it did since he called her baby, but obviously that wasn't true. People were beginning to stare, so Haley held up her hand in impatience.
“Since when do you care about Ally, huh? If I’m your “baby”, then you shouldn’t care as much as you obviously do.” Was it really going to end right here, right now? Because of me? I backed up, further from the scene playing out in front of me. I reached my arm behind my back, and pinched my arm. Well, I guess it was happening. All the throwing up of the arms, and calling each other swear words in a school hallway. It was all happening, along with the break up and Nate dragging me out the building.
“I’m sorry you had to see that.” He rubbed his hand on his forehead, frustrated at himself.
“Nate, it’s fine, really. It’s not a big deal. I see people argue all the time.” I rubbed his back, and he looked up at me with his tear soaked eyes.
“But, your parents-”
“Nate, stop okay?” I just wanted him to stop crying and blaming himself for this, and also yelling and arguing with Haley in front of me. “It’s been awhile since I’ve had to see something like my parents, but it’s high school. I see it almost everywhere I walk in there.” I say, gesturing to the school building. Nate pulled me into his chest, and I sighed. He rubbed his eyes and kissed my head.
“I’m so glad we’re friends.” He hugged me tighter, friends. “Wanna go to your house?”
“Uhm, sure?” I was nervous earlier, but now that he was a single man things could escalate. Who am I kidding, he just became a single man. Nothing will happen. Right?
