“Please let me in. I am late for my class now.”
“Oh no mister. You see this sign? NO PETS ALLOWED.”
“But I’m gonna miss my class again. We have our long quiz tomorrow in Algebra. This is life and death situation for me.”
The guard in his fit white uniform with a badge of an eagle and a leaf surrounding it just looked at me coldly. Well I admire this middle-aged man for being tough and for being insensitive right now. And I am never gonna get a chance today. It never really worked. I tried to have that charisma, that persuading power but I am really not for that thing. I guess I have to cut classes again. It’s not my fault though. Why did I even accept this gift? My mom might hate me for this.
I resigned from this pointless begging so I carried my new pet instead and walked away.
A few minutes ago, I bumped into an old man with a basket filled with onions, garlic and tomatoes. I was so into the music I was listening to that I didn’t notice the old man. We were both surprised. The basket fell off and all those onions and garlic and tomatoes made me run for them as they roll in different directions. I was so embarrassed with what happened so I kept saying sorry. Thank God he wasn’t any other old man who would scream and curse at you like hell. He just smiled at me and said it’s alright. I was on my last chase of the tomato and when I put it in the basket, he looked at me intently. It was insulting at first but when I looked at him, there was such a warmth that I felt which is why I forgot that I have two humungous red pimples on my face right now, one on my nose and the other on my forehead.
“Is there anything else I could do for you, sir?”
He was suddenly interrupted.
“Oh no, kiddo. I think you got all those balls in the basket now.”
This old man has sense of humor.
“I’m sorry, sir. I promise it won’t happen again.”
I told him hoping it would give me a runaway signal now.
“Don’t mind. Just always be careful.”
Now that sounded creepy. I hesitated for a while and gave a smile in response.
“I guess I’d better be going now. Don’t wanna be late today, long quiz tomorrow not to mention my birthday too.” And why did I mention that?
“Really? Well then, happy birthday! Today must be your lucky day kid. I have something to give as a token of gratitude and a birthday present as well.”
“Thank you but you don’t have to give me anything sir.”
Was it there earlier? I didn’t notice he has a puppy with him. He put his chain on and handed it to me.
“A puppy?”
I was struck but at the same time happy. It’s the first gift for my birthday and I always wished to have a dog for a birthday present. It took my attention for a while. It’s so cute I just wanted to squeeze it. When I realized I was playing with it for long, I was about to say thank you to the old man and ask what this puppy’s name is, but then he was gone.
“All right then. What name shall I give you?”
The puppy’s the most adorable thing in the world next to my pillows. Its eyes are grey, almost like a foreigner’s pair of grey eyes and its fur so fluffy and white.
“Oh yeah. From this day onwards, you’ll be my Sky.”
He looked at me as though he confirmed that he liked his name.
