The sound of Jamie's breathing was hypnotic in the quiet room. Soft pulls of air, in and out of his nose, his lips slightly parted, eyes gently shut. Moonlight bathed his form through the thin slits of his shutters, making his dark skin look ethereal; full, pale lips just begging to be kissed. He was lying on his back, head resting on his pillow, while Isaac Kirk stared at his profile unabashedly, his heart aching with longing.
Isaac felt the organ lurch when Jamie's lips curled into a small smirk, eyes still closed.
"Go to sleep, Isaac."
"I can't," Isaac whispered, voice almost a whine. Between them, Isaac was holding Jamie's right hand, fingers curled delicately around Jamie's wrist, where he knew the Soulmate Mark would appear. The fact that he was touching it – even through the soft, black leather cuff to protect the mark from prying eyes – made his insides feel weirdly warm.
"You know I'll wake you up when it happens. Besides, it's only midnight. Technically, my birthday doesn't start until two forty-five A.M."
"Not helping here, Jamie," Isaac complained, making his best friend laugh.
Jamie shifted his hand, twisting it a little so he could tangle their fingers. Isaac was so nervous, so full of that unnameable emotion he felt like he was going to be sick.
"Go to sleep, Isaac," Jamie's voice was softer, less teasing. "I promise I'll wake you up."
And like a pup obeying their master, Isaac's eyes fell shut.

"Isaac."
Isaac blinked his eyes open. It took him a second to ponder why he was in Jamie's room, and everything seemed to come rushing into him like he'd just broken the surface of a roaring sea. It was still dark outside, the moonlight brighter now, making Isaac see the brown tint to Jamie's dark eyes.
"James?" Isaac asked, sounding almost scared. His heart felt ten sizes too big.
Jamie reached out to grab his hand, curling it around the cuff on his right wrist.
"I can feel it, Isaac," Jamie whispered, his voice thick. His eyes were dark pools, holding an expression so deep – so intense Isaac wanted to drown in them.
"Tell me," Isaac begged.
Jamie's Adam's apple bobbed as he whispered, "It feels...warm. Like just that spot is being heated by a beam of sunlight."
"Yeah?"
Jamie's voice turned even huskier as Isaac's thumb helplessly pressed against his skin. His eyelids fluttered, eyelashes so pretty as they reflected the moon's rays.
"It feels...it feels..."
"Yeah?"
Jamie's face was magnifying, their bodies shifting closer on the mattress like one was a magnet and the other was metal.
"Isaac." Fuck, the way Jamie said his name, between a moan and a sigh, had Isaac's thighs tensing, his skin alight like he'd been set on fire.
Their noses brushed, breaths puffing against their lips, and Isaac was afraid his heart would soon make a run for it out of his ribcage. His entire body seemed to tremble with a longing that went deep into his bone marrows, lips tingling from being so close to Jamie's.
They kept rubbing their noses together, until Isaac was arching in the bed, his lips pouting helplessly.
"Isaac," Jamie whispered, his voice trembling, "Isaac, we promised we'd wait."
"I know," Isaac said, sounding tortured. They didn't stop rubbing noses, lips barely brushing.
Isaac's whole body was singing with love and want.
"Oh God, Isaac," Jamie groaned, his right hand clenching into a fist. Jamie pressed down on his inner wrist on instinct, and Jamie let out a sound that was positively sinful.
And Isaac knew, deep down in his heart of hearts, that Jamie was definitely his.
