There is a knock on the door. I check the wall clock as I put the throw pillows in their right positions. It is 3 pm, just in time. I rush to the door and take a pause before opening the door.
"Good afternoon, sir. Good afternoon ma" I say, bending a little.
"Good afternoon my daughter." he says, laughing.
"Good afternoon darling" the woman also says and then gives me a small hug.
I pave way for them to come in. A guy about Harrison's age or older and a girl come in after them. They must be their kids. The guy is dressed in a blue jeans and a black round neck top. His hair cut is cool, really cool. He is brown skinned while his sister is caramel skinned. She is wearing a sleeveless burgundy gown. Her braids are perfectly packed into a ponytail. She is really pretty, I must say.
"Hi" I say to them
"Hello" the guy responds, smiling.
"Good afternoon" I say again, looking directly at the girl since she didn't reply the first time.
She only looks at me and walks away. That is rude.
The guy gives me a small smile after reading the expression on my face, obviously. "Tara is not friendly. She is kinda rude" he says, smiling. Oh! So she is Tara.
I mentally add Tara to the list of people I hate.
"Oh" I say as I walk to the sitting room
"And I am Tayo, by the way. Tayo Adetiba" he says
"Isabella Davids" I bluntly say, still angered by his sister's rude reaction
My parents are just coming down the stairs when we enter the sitting room. Tayo sits on a chair close to Tara.
"Hahaha. Look who we have here" my dad says, laughing
"Ore (friend), haha. Biola, you have changed o" Mr Dele Adetiba says, standing up.
They both hug for a while, laughing so hard as they do so.
My mum and Mr Dele's wife hug too and say some unclear things to each other and they both giggle.
I guess they have met before because of the way they are hugging and 'whispering'. It's like they are friends too. I just smile.
"Ahn ahn. Davids Abiola, the great Davids Abiola of our time" Mr Dele Adetiba teases immediately after they detach from each other
"Dele Adetiba! Dele!! The mighty Dele." my dad says again, making both of them laugh so loud.
I mentally roll my eyes as I watch them. The way they greet each other, call each other's full names and laugh, though. I sense there are bringing back memories, in a coded manner. I let out a small laugh at their playfulness. Men will always be boys.
They become silent again.
"Moyo has been really taking care of you o. Just look at you, you are looking all fresh. Man, you look good!" my dad says again. Moyo must be Mrs Adetiba." Look at you. As if Jemima has not been taking care of you. We see the pictures o" Mr Dele replies and they all laugh.
Then, they all sit down.
"So, how far now? How is work? And the kids? I am sure Tayo would have grown into a man now" my dad says and I almost roll my eyes at him. So, he hasn't noticed Tayo and that Tara since. Yes, that rude Tara. I glance her. She is so engrossed in whatever she is doing on her phone. She doesn't look like she is aware of what every one is doing. I wonder why she is so unfriendly. Her parents and not even Tayo are like that. I internally hiss and look at her with disgust.
Tayo, on the other hand, is watching our parents or fathers, rather as they do their little drama.
"Ahn ahn. Biola, you are getting old" Mr Dele jokes. "Is this not Tayo? And that is Tara, his younger sister." he adds.
"Are you serious? You won't believe I did not notice them at all. I was so engrossed in our little whatever that I didn't even see Tayo. Ahn ahn. Tayo, come and greet me jhur" dad says, making gestures at him.
Tayo stands up, that warm smile never leaving his face. He throws himself into my dad open arms as if he was his son.
"Ahn ahn, you have really become a man. The last time I saw you ehn. You were about one or two years old then." he pauses and gives Mr Dele a look as if to say am I right. Mr Dele nods and dad continues "Look at you now. I just got married then. Your parents had not even had Tara that time. So how is studies? You are in which school now?"
"University of Ibadan, sir."
"He doesn't want to study abroad o. I wanted him to study over there." Mr Dele says, showing that he is not totally pleased that his son is studying here in Nigeria. I roll my eyes and look at my mum to know if she caught me. She didn't, thankfully.
I really don't understand why these men want their kids to study over there. My dad wants us to study outside the country. Well, Harrison doesn't like the idea especially because he doesn't want to be away from Helen. Those two. They are very adorable. I love Helen. She is very nice. I want to go to a Nigerian university too. People say it is an interesting place to be in and I want to experience it too. I hope Leo and I go to the same university. Leo. I really like him a lot. Now, that I think of him, I remember I should tell him I won't be able to make it. To the cinemas, of course.
"Wow. Medicine and Surgery, 300 level. That's good. You want to become a doctor like your dad" my dad's voice snaps me out of my thoughts. So Mr Adetiba is actually Dr. Adetiba. Mistake corrected
"Tara, what about you?"
"My final year in secondary school, sir. Ss3." she says, respectfully with a genuine smile. Why was she rude to me?
She is been so friendly and respectful to my parents. I hiss quietly. I really don't like her.
Just then, my brothers come into the sitting room. They greet the Adetibas. I notice how Tara is staring at Christopher. Christopher is wearing a white T-shirt and a shorts. Truth be told, Christopher is very handsome, though I hate to say it to him for obvious reasons. So, I understand why she is looking at him that way.
Then, I realize Chris is also staring her. Chris! Christopher staring at a girl. Wow. Chris is not the type that looks at girls, maybe he does. But certainly, not this way. Maybe this might be fun but why Tara?
