Prologue
I remember when I was little I'd always sing for Maman and a handsome boy. I wasn't allowed to directly talk to him, no matter how much I begged Maman. The maids always took me away before I could mutter a word towards his directions.
"But I want to get to know him," I'd always whine.
"Perhaps one day you will Lady Mioka, but not quite yet."
"Why?" I would ask every single time.
At that moment they would become silent and escort me to my room without another sound.
One night, when I was twelve, I snuck out of my room after observing the boy the whole day. I crept down the hall and opened the door, but he wasn't there. Or, so I thought.
I heard a quite sound, almost as though it was underwater. I stepped in the room and saw a light coming from underneath the doorway of another room within his.
Although I just barely heard it, my ears rung with the sweet melody. I began walking closer and closer to the sound and light. I opened the door and saw him. He looked up from the piano and stopped playing.
"It's you!" he exclaimed in glee as he slid out from the piano seat.
"You play the piano extraordinarily!" I fawned over his amazing talent.
"I wouldn't say so, my Maman plays much better."
"Really? My Maman plays the piano too! I wish I could play, but I feel like all I can do is sing," I told him sadly.
"Please, don't be sad. I'm sure any melody that your fingers played would create a beautiful song. I'll teach you," he said extending his arm out towards the piano and bowing.
"Wow, you'd really teach me?" I asked sitting down on the bench.
"Of course, if that's what would make you happy."
I put both my hands on the piano and pressed my hands down. An awful cord sounded making myself and the boy cringe.
"You just need some practice," he chuckled.
I drew my hands away from the piano and looked away in shame. I'd felt so embarrassed because he played so beautifully, and I... Well my skills would probably make a dozen birds drop from the sky.
"Hey, don't give up now. You just started! Here's the "C" key, and this one is the "D" key, and this one is the "E" key," he explained to me.
"That's dumb. Why is it like that?"
"What! I don't know!" he exclaimed completely shocked.
I laughed at his reaction. "So, teach me to play something."
"Hm, well let's start with a basic C Scale. The pattern is C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C."
I played it and looked at him disappointed. "That didn't sound like anything you were playing."
He laughed, "You'll just need to practice some more and then you'll be able to play that piece!"
"Can you play a bit, uhm- What's your name?"
"I'm Tamaki," he grinned.
I moved over and he sat beside me. His fingers caressed the keys of the piano gently as he played a lullaby.
I began feeling myself grow sleepy and I felt my head rest on his shoulder. Yet, he still managed to play beautifully. I think I fell asleep, but a yell woke me up. I jumped a bit out of the seat.
"Mioka, you were told not to be near that boy so many times! You are bothering him, and you weren't listening to your mère," a maid yelled at me.
"I don't think her maman would mind, really," Tamaki defended.
