Carter scrambled back, a shadow dashing out from and back behind the the trash can. She widened her eyes. "W-What was that?!"

I rolled my eyes. "You baby. It was probably just an animal." I craned my neck. "I can't see what it is. Wait..." I quickly reached into my pocket.

"...aha." I pulled out my phone and flashed the light behind the dumpster. Melon yellow eyes looked back at me. It looked like... a kitten...? Probably making the wrong decision at the time, I extended my hand towards it.

"Come here..." I murmured, feeling a wet nose touch my fingertips. I gritted my teeth and aimed to swiftly grab it's scruff. Luckily, I was successful.

The kitten was a tiny light brown tabby. It was also covered in cobwebs and flailing. It also wasn't trying to bite me, so it probably didn't have rabies. That was something I should have thought about before sticking my hand behind a dumpster. "Carter, how did you get to New York?" I asked

Carter blinked. "A bus. Cost me a fortune."

I smirked deviously. "Carpool back?"

"Yessss!" Carter nodded quickly. The kitten was squirming like crazy, but after a few minutes of walking, calmed itself down.

When we returned to the car, the sky was already turning pink. Walking into the car garage, I opened the door and quickly put the kitten in the back seat. It definitely wouldn't stay still, but I was an overly cautious driver, so I would probably be fine.

Carter climbed into the shotgun seat. "Lets just hope the cat doesn't piss in the car." she muttered.

"Don't set me up for an anxiety attack, Car," I retorted.

"I'm just warning you."

My car wasn't anything fancy. It was basically a twelve year old box on wheels with a stick shift, so it probably wasn't going to make that much of a dent the warranty. But cleaning up cat urine still wasn't fun, especially in the Summer.

After about two hours of the occasional chatter, Carter hit the radio button. I rolled my eyes. Oh great.

Carter started to sing along. "But you didn't have to cut me off! Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing! And I don't even need your love, but you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough."

I slowly grinned as the woman dang. She was definitely a better singer than me... but I might as well try. "But you didn't have to stoop so low! Have your friends collect your records and then change your number. I guess that I don't need that though. Now you're just somebody that I used to know."

We grinned and began the chorus, just as something caught my eye. "SOMBOD-" I slammed the breaks. The kitten let out a yelp, but managed to dig into the seats and was therefore alright.

"What the hell was that for?!" Carter screamed. I gritted my teeth and honked at the black Sedan that had attempted to pass us for practically no reason.

"Aggressive drivers...?" Carter asked. I nodded.

The Sedan, though, turned back towards us, coming at us waaaay over the speed limit. I honestly doubted that they were attempting to pass us this time.

"Oh crap!" I hissed, slamming my foot down on the accelerator pedal. The box on wheels lurched forward. Before I knew it, I was speeding down the country road, a man in the passenger seat of the Sedan holding something. It was dark. And pointed. I shouted something incoherent in realization, Carter screaming "Drive, woman!" practically into my ear.

I accelerated as much as I could without killing everyone in the car. I could feel my adrenaline pulsing through me as I stared, my eyes locked ahead. "Shit fuck shit fuck shit shit shit shit fuck holy Hell-!"

Carter blinked. "Anything I could throw at them?!" She shouted.

I thought for a moment. "Empty the plastic tub in the back." Carter unbuckled her seat belt and climbed back, dumping the contents on the car floor. Carter returned to her seat, buckling the seatbelt, and opening the passenger door. "Be careful!" I shouted. Carter extended her arm and let go of the tub, and quickly slammed the door, narrowly avoiding a bullet.

"Good work, Bond," I mumbled, glancing at the swerving car in the rear view mirror. I then quickly turned on another back road.

We drove the remainder of the way in silence, and it was already nighttime before we reached my house. I removed the kitten and took it into the house. Of course Echo ended up hissing at the kitten, I was exhausted. I didn't feel like doing anything but sleep.

"You can stay over, I don't care." I mumbled, collapsing onto the couch.

Carter yawned. "Thanks, man." She climbed the stairs. I did not see her until the next day.

Looking back... I'm going to blame us not calling the police on the fact that we were tired, not my stupidity. Yeah, we'll go with that.
