"Are you sure this is going to work?" Wilace asked, skeptical at the whole ordeal.

"Sure, what other idea do you have?" Tira answered as she fidgeted with the lock on her cage.

Finally, the rusted pieces of metal came loose and the cat easily slipped out.

"See, told ya," as she climbed over to Wilace's cage.

Wilace stared dumbfounded at the broken pieces of metal on the floor.
They were so light they barely made a sound.

Tira climbed carefully onto Wilace's cage and broke the lock with her sharp claws.

"Now come on, before they find us!" Tira whispered.

A few of the other animals whimpered and whined and begged for her to free them.
But she didn't have time for this.
So she ran off, through the crack in the window, and became runaways.

The moonlight shone brightly on their tattered fur as they jumped into the blue mess of the night.
A few cars zipped past them but each time they sent chills down Wilace's spine.

The burned memory of being pulled into that old broken up van by the collar always haunted him.

Tira kept on going.

She couldn't bear to be locked up again.
It was like torture to her.
Like chains tied to her neck.
Keeping her from leaving this terrible place.

Until a little naive pup came into a cage right next to her.

She couldn't help but feel pity for the poor thing.

She had promised herself to never open up her heart after her owners left her.
But she'd broken it.
Again.

Occasionally she would glance back and check if Wilace was still behind her.
She didn't want to lose him.
She didn't want to lose anyone anymore.
Never again.

They ran and ran until they reached an ally that Tira knew too well.

It was her ally.

The one she had lived in since her owners' betrayal.

She grabbed a piece of a torn garbage bag and motioned for Wilace to rest on it.

"I'll keep watch for a bit. I have a few enemies around here who aren't too fond of me." Tira said to Wilace as he gratefully rested on the torn plastic.

Tira spotted a small rat and easily caught it without any trouble.

She gave half to Wilace and soon checked the garbage cans for any leftovers to eat.

She found few things to eat and gathered them in a pile.
She glanced at the bright moon, finally free from the chains of the pound and was free to roam with out any bars blocking her way.
She hoped this would last forever.
But fate had a different idea.
