My name is Avery and I am 12 years old. I live in Lansing Michigan with my dad. My mom died when I was 4 and my grandparents are also gone. My dad is the only family I have left. He is in the final stages of lung cancer and has to stay at the hospital. He has been in here for almost a month and he hates it. You see it's now track season and I'm ranked fastest sprinter in the state and my dad has taken me running since I was a little kid (drove my mom nuts). He has been my coach since I started track and cross country and now he's stuck here in the hospital (not that I'm complaining).
After school I walk to the hospital, which is now my new home as well , and go up to my dads floor . When I get up there I see Dr. Cullen (my dad's doctor) walking towards my dad's room so I hurry up and walk next to him.
"Hey dr. Cullen! How are you today?"
He warps an arm around my shoulders and lightly squeezes me to his side and says playfully, " "Avery how many times do I have to tell u to call me Carlisle not Dr. Cullen?"
I just simply smile at him and we walk into my dads room. When we get there we see that he is sleeping so I drop my bag on my bed, grab some running clothes and walk to the bathroom to change. When I come out Carlisle is checking my dads chart and as I walk by he looks at me and asks what I'm doing. " "I am going for a run then I'm to do an ab workout maybe I'll go run the stairs when I'm done with that." I tell him. He just nods his head and turns his attention back to my father until I put my pink calf sleeve on my right leg. " "What are you wearing that for?" He asks me. " "My shin is starting to hurt again. I think I just have shin splints. I got it last cross country season." He sets the chart down and walks over to me with a concerned look on his face. " "Sit back on the bed and let me see ur leg." " "Carlisle it's fine it's probably nothing I'll ice it when I get back." I whined. " "Avery I'm the doctor here not u now sit down and let me see it." He said and I obeyed stubbornly. He pulled my shoe off and gently pulled my calf sleeve off. He started running his thumb down my shin pushing down slightly asking me to well him when it hurt. Once he hit the spot r flinched away and he took his hand off my leg and moved to my foot. He pushed my foot up the down then right and left. I hurt a little when he did this but not much. "It seems you just have shin splints. You can go run but I want u to come find me when you are done so I can check it again. Ok?" " "Fine" I said while grabbing my prewrap and warping both my knees. When we got to the elevators he grabbed my hand pulled out a sharpie and wrote his number on my hand and said " "If your shin hurts to much call me and I'll come pick you up ok? Don't push your self to hard and be careful." " "Ok Carlisle I'll see you later." I stepped into the elevator smiling. I liked the staff here and all but Carlisle Cullen was my favorite person here. He arranged it so I could stay here with my dad when child services wanted to put me into foster care since I have nobody to take care of me. He was like my second father. I think my dad did the best he could on his own but he pushed me way to hard and that made so afraid to fail.
When I got out of the hospital I started my usual run. Just around the block since I was a sprinter I didn't need to run that far just fast. The block was about 2 1/2 miles so I sprinted a 200 then jogged one and did that all the way around the block. When I was on my last 200 I tripped and fell on the sidewalk. When I got up my ribs on my left side, left arm, and left leg were stinging. I looked at my leg and saw lots of blood and my arm was the same. My ribs though they were a different story. I lifted my shirt to assess the damage and I could see the white bone sticking out of my skin. It was a good thing I had a strong stomach otherwise I would have thrown up. I pulled my phone out, dialed Carlisle's number and he answered on the second ring with "Hello Dr. Cullen speaking." In between gasps of breath I told him what happened as I walked the rest of the way to the hospital. When I got to the parking lot I saw Carlisle running out the doors with another doctor and a stretcher. I sighed and stopped walking. When Carlisle got to me he quickly but gently picked me up and laid me on the stretcher. "It doesn't hurt that much." I said seeing his concerned look. He pulled my shirt up to get a better look at the nasty ribs and gasped. "What did you fall on Avery?" He asked while they pushed me back towards the hospital. "I tripped on something and a piece of sidewalk was sticking up and bang!" I told him throwing my hands in the air then wincing the pain was starting to get stronger and the tears started to fall. "Shhhhh just relax we are almost there sweetheart." He said as he brushed my tears away. When we were finally at the ER I was transferred to a bed and given an IV. The attending ER doctor looked at Carlisle and said "I've got it from here Dr. Cullen." I looked at Carlisle with fear in my eyes. I didn't know this other doctor and I surely didn't trust him. "No this is my patient and I will take care of her. Ok?" Carlisle said looking at the other doctor and he just huffed and walked away. "Somebody is a little grumpy today." I said watching the doctor storm away. "Yeah he always is." Carlisle said looking back down at me and decided my dislocated rib was the worst injury and it needed stitches. "Do I have to Carlisle I don't want any." I whined. I really hated anything to do with needles. Carlisle came back over to me with all the supplies he needed on a tray. He had a sympathetic look on his face when he sat down beside my bed and pulled my shirt up again. "Yes Avery you do. I'm sorry honey I'll be as gentle as I can but I have to clean the wound first then put your rib back in place it is going to hurt." He said while putting gloves on and grabbing his tweezers. It didn't hurt to much when he took all the gravel out but then came the peroxide. I had to bite my lip to keep from screaming and I had tears streaming down my face. Carlisle held my hand while the peroxide did it's job. Once that was over he had to put my rib back in place. I did scream that time. Then he gave me a shot and started sewing it up. I didn't really know he was doing it until I felt the coolness of the gauze and tape on my sweaty body. He cleaned and bandaged my arm and my leg then injected some pain medicine in my IV since I was still crying from all the pain I felt. "How does your shin feel? Does it hurt as well?" "A little but not as much as everything else does. I'm sorry to be so much trouble I know this isn't your job." I said in a small voice not meeting his eyes. He pulled his chin up to meet his gaze "Avery this is my job. The other day when you were at school your dad said he wanted me to take care of you once he couldn't. Is that ok with you?" "Does that mean I don't have to go into foster care or are you just taking care of me medically?" I asked. "No Avery when your farther is gone you can come live with my wife and me if you want to. But if you don't I completely understand." I sat up quickly and threw my arms around him forgetting I was hurt. Carlisle hugged me back he seemed to forget I was hurt too. "I would love to come and live with you." I said and when I loosened my hold I felt a rush of pain coming from my rib and I froze. Carlisle gently and slowly unfolded my arms and laid me back on the bed. "Let me make sure you didn't pop any stitches." He said while lifting my shirt up and looking under the bandage he put on me. "Nope ur all good but don't do anything like that again ok?" "Yeah, I'll be more careful. Can you unhook me from all this so I can go up to my dad's room and try to explain what happened?" I asked him with a pleading look. "I am going to get some ice for your leg first and when I come back we will move you to a smaller bed and take u up there. I don't want u walking. U just dislocated ur rib, got 19 stitches, and lost a ton of blood. U need to rest and regain ur strength." And with that he left. I was kinda nervous about them taking me into my sick fathers room in a hospital gown with bandages, stitches, bruises, and an IV sticking out of my hand. I probably looked a lot worse than I felt. But then again Carlisle did give me pain medicine. A few minutes later Carlisle pulled the curtain that in closed my bed holding a bag of ice and pulling a smaller more mobile bed. Once the ice was good and taped he lifted me up and gently laid me on the new bed and moved the IV bag to the bar above me. "Avery, r u ok? U look scared." He said as he started pushing me towards the elevators. "I'm ok I just don't know how my father will react. I probably look a lot worse than I actually am." I said looking up at him. "U don't look that bad just a little banged up I'm sure he'll be fine." Carlisle reassured me. The elevator doors opened and we were on my fathers floor. When we were outside my fathers door Carlisle looked down at me and asked, "r u ready?" "I guess" I said and he pushed me in the room. My father looked like he only had a few days left in him. This made me really sad I wasn't ready for him to go yet but I knew it was his time. He was awake and when he saw me he jumped and all but yelled "What the hell happened to u I thought u were going out for a run?!?" I looked at him then I looked up at Carlisle who
nodded at me to go on so I looked at my father and explained what happened. He laughed and though it was really funny. Once I was transferred to my bed I looked up at Carlisle and asked "how long do I have to stay here? I have to be at school at 7:30." "Avery u can't go to school tomorrow. U lost a lot of blood and slight movements could pop ur stitches out. Just try to go to sleep. I'll probably take ur IV out in the morning if ur not in any pain." He said. I yawned and my eyes started to droop. Carlisle smiled placed his hand on my forehead and walked over to my father. When I woke up I reached over and grabbed my cellphone and checked the time. It was 11:30 my eyes grew huge whatever was in that pain medicine knocked me out for 11 hours! A couple minutes later Carlisle walked in and smiled at me seeing that I was awake. "Nice to see you've finally joined us. You've been out for a long time." He said as he sat on the side of my bed. I just nodded. I was still pretty tired and my body ached. "I'm going to check ur stitches ok?" He said as he pulled the blanket to my waist and pulled the gown up to my chin (I had a sports bra on). I nodded and took a deep breath. He took the bandage off my ribs and started prodding the area. "Does this hurt any?" He asked me. "A little bit but not that much. Why?" I asked looking up at him. "It's slightly bruised but nothing to worry about. U don't seem to have any internal damage. Now I just need to change ur other bandages and u can go back to sleep." He said while pulling my gown back down and taking the blanket to expose my legs. "When can I get the IV out?" I asked him shaking my hand. "Maybe later ur still on pain medicine and if I take u off it now ur not going to like it." He said not meeting my eyes. I have a feeling he's trying to hide something from me. "Is there something wrong with my father?" I ask him. He stopped working on my leg took his gloves off and looked at me with pained eyes and said "ur father probably won't make it to the end of the day. I'm so sorry Avery." It took me a minute to process what he said but when I did the tears started to fall uncontrollably. Carlisle pulled me into a hug and I cried into the crook of his neck for about 15 minutes. Until the pain in my ribs was too much to handle. Carlisle then lowered me back down onto my bed. "Can I see him? Is he awake?" I ask Carlisle. "Yes he is awake but barely. I can take u over to him but try not to move to much. U still need to heal." He said and grabbed the IV bag placed it between his teeth and reached down to lift me up. I reached up and warped my arms around his neck as he lifted me and carried me to the chair next to my dads bed. He put my IV bag next to my dads and injected something into mine. When I have him a questioning look he said it was for the pain that I would be feeling soon since I was sitting up. I sighed knowing this would knock me out in about an hour but I didn't like the pain I felt. So I just talked to my dad about how I would never forget him and he was a great dad and things like that. When I felt my eyes start to droop I said goodbye and told him that I loved him and he pressed the red button. I saw Carlisle come in and take me to my bed and when he turned to go I reached out and grabbed his hand and said with tears in my eyes "don't leave me too." He leaned down and kissed my forehead "I will never leave u." He sat next to me and held my hand as I drifted off to sleep again. I woke up at 2 the next morning and saw Carlisle asleep in the chair next to me still holding my hand. He looked so worn out I just let him sleep. I sat up and saw my fathers bed was empty knowing what had happened I started to cry. I wanted to be closer to my dad so I quietly took my IV bag and walked over to my dads bed, climbed onto his bed and fell back asleep. I woke up to someone's cool hand on my wrist. I opened my eyes and saw Carlisle checking my pulse and have him a questioning look. "U popped three stitches and lost some blood. Sleeping all curled up in a ball. Now
lets get u back over to ur own bed and fix this." He said as he picked me up and took me back over to to my bed. He laid me down flat on my back and said I needed a new gown since mine had blood on it then he asked if I wanted a female nurse to do it. "No u can do it I don't care I've got a sports bra on so it doesn't matter." He changed my gown and restitched me up. When he was done he sat me on his lap held me in his arms and I cried into his neck.
