Prompt: A little girl narrowly avoids death in a car accident and ever since death has been watching and trying to kill her. Each time she still avoids it so now she decides to get closer to her and make it easier to kill her. She ends up falling for her instead.
Ever since I was little I had always felt like someone was watching me over my shoulder. Occasionally, I would see shadows in the shape of a person. These shadows always appeared when something dangerous to me happened.
One time I was chasing a butterfly and wandered onto the road with out noticing. Just as a large truck drove by I was pulled back by my screaming mother. There it was, watching me from the other side of the road. I blinked and it was gone.
Another time I was hiking in the woods with my dad. We approached a large cliff over looking a clear waterfall. When I took a step close to the edge my dad said to be careful right when the dirt I was standing on crumbled under my feet. I would have fell to my death had my dad not grabbed me and pulled me back up. As he did though, I saw the shadow yet again, this time leaning up against a tree. It seemed angry, at least as angry as a shadow could be, but once again I blinked and it was gone.
By the time I was in high school I had had 12 near death experiences, 13 if you count the one when I was a baby. Around that time I also began to question my sexuality and that's when I met her. My current girlfriend, her name is Madeline and she was the typical goth girl. Long raven hair and a pale face that was dotted with freckles. She wore heavy eyeliner and her eyes were a stormy grey. She never even said a word to me. Yet, for some reason I was drawn to her. It was almost as if some unearthly power was pulling me into her. Eventually, I had managed to befriend her.
At first she was very with drawn and stoic. It didn't take much though before she turned friendly and a bit mischievous. She persuaded me on multiple occasions to go out and do something illegal. Each time we did, as strange as it was, I would have another near death experience.
We would break into the city pool and I would feel something grab my foot and pull me down under the water. We would vandalize an old building and a brick would tumble down, almost hitting my head. We would walk in the woods and a tree would fall down, nearly on top of me. The strangest thing is, each time these things happened, I could've sworn I saw Madeline's stormy eyes turn bright red. When ever I ended up unharmed her expression was frustrated as if she wanted me to get hurt.
Despite this, eventually I realized I had feelings for her. So, I asked her out one night when we were hanging out. She had convinced me to lay out on the abandoned road near her house to watch the stars. Against my best judgement I had agreed. Madeline seemed conflicted the entire night and I wanted to ask what was bothering her. Yet, knowing her she wouldn't respond. So, I decided to make a move on her instead.
I reached out my hand and intertwined our fingers. Startled, she looked over at me with wide confused eyes. Once again I thought I saw a flash of red in them, but it was quickly restored to the stormy grey I was used to. I smiled over at her and gave her hand a gentle squeeze.
"I wanted to talk to you about something." I stated. Nervously, Madeline looked down the road and scrunched up her nose before replying.
"Okay, what is it?" She questioned, concern laced into her words.
"Madeline, I think I'm in love with you." I confessed. I saw a horror slowly pass over her face and I heard a truck horn blade down the road. That was not of concern right now though. All that mattered was Madeline.
"Get out of the road, now." Her expression was pure terror as I furrowed my brows and looked up to see a truck quickly approaching.
"Go! Now!"
I felt my body pulled up by some unearthly force as Madeline jumped in front of the truck. I heard a sickening crack of bone and then the gentle roaring of the truck vanishing down the road. Tears pricked at my eyes as I looked down at the bloody mess that once was Madeline. I fell to the ground and sobbed.
Years later, I payed on my death bed when an unexpected visitor arrived. She was tall and thin with stormy grey eyes and raven black hair. Two horns grew out of the side of her head and she was wearing a black cloak. I smiled and whispered silently.
"You came back for me."
