Jacob continued to gallop through the forest, listening to the 'pit pat' of the little girl as she followed. He heard the little girl call out to him.

"Puppy come back!"

He continued to run.

"Puppy!"

He sniffed the air, trying to locate a certain scent. It was a little hard from the girl's own intoxicating smell, but he was able to pinpoint the scent. It smelled of roses and campfire.

His mother. She was here not too long ago.

He picked up the pace.

"Puppy wait....I...I can't keep up!"

He skidded to a halt and turned back to the girl. She was leaning against a tree, clutching her stomach and panting heavily. He trotted up to her and rubbed his head on the back of her hand, whining. She looked down at him, tiny beads of sweat slipping down her face. She stroked his head.

"It's...okay puppy...I'm just....tired." She panted.

He whined quietly and pawed at her leg. Suddenly, his mother's voice slipped into his head.

"Matthew where are you?!"

"Don't worry mama. I'm alright."

"Oh thank goodness. Where are you?"

"I'm close to the border. Come here I want you to meet someone."

"Okay...I'm coming...be safe...there are rogues everywhere."

"Alright mama."

Once closing the mindlink, he looked up at the girl. She took a final gulp of air and looked down at him, staring into his raspberry eyes. He sat by her side and pawed at her leg again. She sat and began to stroke his head. He closed his eyes at the luxury.

"I wonder what your name is?" She asked as she massaged his ear.

He sleepily opened his eyes and looked at her.

"My name's Mia Forest."

He sat still.

"Mia...." He thought, tasting the name on his tongue. "That's pretty...."

Suddenly, a strange scent wafted into his nose. Blood, dirt, and what smelled like....roadkill, and something that hadn't bathed in months.

"Rogues...."

He turned, stepped in front of her, and growled. Despite being so young, his growl echoed deep for his age and with slivers of rage, added more intensity to the warning.

"Puppy?" The girl asked standing, a hint of fear in her voice.

He shuffled backwards so that his side was pressing against her leg.

His fur prickled, his lip curled back to show long white fangs as a manged rogue stepped out of some bushes, saliva dripped from its mouth in long stringy waterfalls, it's wild, untamed eyes were bloodshot, it's grey coat missing chunks of fur in large patches. It's was so thin that you could see its ribs as if they were placed right in front of you. It's long gnashing fangs were yellowed. It snarled at the two.

Jacob growled again, warning the foul creature. He could feel Mia trembling beside him. Stealing a glance, he looked at her face. Her blue eyes bulged in fear, her mouth gaped and labored breathing escaped her lips.

He opened the mindlink to his mother.

"Mama..."

"What?"

"There's a rogue."

"What?! Where?!"

"Right in front of me."

"OH MY GOSH HOLD ON BABY I'M ALMOST THERE!!"

"Hurry mama."

"DON'T YOU DARE TRY TO FIGHT IT!!"

He didn't answer his mother's plea as he closed the mindlink.

He glared dangerously at the rogue.

The rogue snarled, gaining a small whimper from the girl.

"Puppy...I'm scared...." She whimpered.

He stole a glance at the girl. Tears were swelling in her fearful eyes. He pressed his body closer to Mia as he snarled.

The wolf growled savagely as it bent it's knees, preparing to lunge. Suddenly, a blur of grey fur lunged from some nearby bushes, knocking the wolf to the side. Jacob could fell the girl flinch and a small squeak escaped her lips as snarls, growls and the snapping of jaws filled the air.

"P-Puppy..." She whispered, shakily kneeling beside him. She wrapped her arms around his neck and nuzzled into his fur. "I-I'm sc-scared."

He nuzzled her ear, his own trained on the two wolves snarling and barkig as they wrestled in the leaves and twigs of the forest floor. Yips and howls of pain echoed in the air until there was a thud. The girl tightened her grip, burying her face further into his fur.

The rogue snarled at the large wolf above him, gnashing it's teeth. Now that the tussle was over, Jacob could see who the savior was.

His coat was completely fog grey. His eyes the color of amber, the paws in which he held the rogue under where the size of large rocks. It was Kia, the captain of the hunters. He snarled savagely at the rogue, leaning into his face. The rogue finally whimpered in submission, laying his head onto the forest floor.

Jacob sighed, letting out the breath he had unknowingly held. Suddenly, he felt the girl move away from him. He watched her stand and looked at the rogue underneath Kia's paw. Suddenly, she stepped towards it.

Jacob tensed. He gently tugged her sleeve with his teeth, begging her not to go any closer.

"Don't worry puppy...I'll be okay..." She said soothingly. She turned to Kia. "Can you hold him a while longer?"

Kia looked at her, taken aback.

He looked at Jacob, awaiting instructions. Jacob stared at the girl for a moment longer, fear pounding in his heart. He looked at Kia and nodded.

Kia looked to Mia.

"Thank you..." She said.

She stepped to the rogue. It snarled, Kia snarled back, making the wolf whimper. Mia slipped to her knees, and gently lifted her hand to the rogue. It snarled again.

"Shhh....it's okay....I'm not gonna hurt you..." She whispered.

The rogue kept the snarl as she gently lowered her hand onto its head, and began to stroke. The rogue immediately relaxed, the snarl vanishing, it's breathe slowing.

"Good boy..."

Jacob stood frozen in shock as the girl continued to stroke the matted fur of the wolf. He was shocked at how easily he had calmed, just by the stroke of her hand.
