Being the only five year old in the first grade seemed uncomfortable for Highness, but she was too busy being excited about her first day at school. The teacher was a nice caucasian woman , whom did not speak the native language of the Isles of Pasifika,  so when she realized that Highness was not a local, but an American mainland born girl, so the teacher utilized her in a manner that caused the little American girl to have enemies from that moment. Highness helped the teacher through out the day, and she interpret many of the class assignments for the students from the teacher, which had caused the teacher to favor Highness, but Twila, a girl who did not find Highness at all helpful, made it a point to give her a hard time.

Twila told her sister whom was 8 years their senior about Highness,  so by the end of the day the older classmates cornered Highness in the bathroom and dunked her head in the toilet repeatedly until Twila felt satisfied about the punishment.

Highness sat in the bathroom stall gasping for air as the last of the girls in the restroom exited. She was unsure if the events of what just happened were real, but seeing that she was damped from her head down to her skirt, it was quite obvious it was not a dream.

Highness picked her bag up from the floor and followed the trail of her school work that Twila and her sisters scattered all over the floor. A head popped in tbe bathroom with the same haircut as Highness and looked very puzzled at her standing there drenched. "Those are mine!" ! Highness griped and snatched the papers out of the little hands of the tight eye girl with a mushroom haircut. As Highness stirmed off, she turned back to see the girl standing there sniffling, she mumbled to herself and walked over to the little mushroom head girl. "What is your name?" Highness asked the girl, "Mary", replied the mushroom girl. Highness stuck her hand out and said to Mary, "Nice to meet you."

Highness started walking and Mary followed, it took no time at all for Mary to ask Highness questions, Mary lived near the school and knew Twila's family and friends, so she let Highness know everything she needed to know about her new nemesis.

Highness did not want to go home to HaruHaru while her school uniform was still damped, so she hung out with Mary for a while to soak up the evening sun before it set. Highness took Mary to the store and bought her some candy and donuts, while they stayed on the backside of the school overlooking the trenches of the back villages. Mary showed Highness where Twila lived also, and informed her that Twila's mom is the awful lunch lady.

The two young girls established their friendship from that day on. Mary was also a victim of Twila during Kindergarten, and the two have had a relationship of something similar to sibling rivalry. Mary and Twila have been best friends, so Mary asked Highness if they were able to be best friends,  and Highness told her they were already. Highness coukd tell this mushroom head girl was a victim of circumstance like Twila expected Highness to be, but I guess it will be a long year to beat the girls at school at their own game and becoming a part of The Lady Birds. Being a Lady Bird meant being accepted by the school and not having to be a joke for the rest of the time attending Lady Bird School.
