Karas' pov- District 12 Female Tribute

OMG OMG OMFG OMFG I WAS GONNA DIEEEEE!!!!!

And then I tuned everyone out of my view, then thought of him. Him.

So my father was a friend of the mayor. We would often be invited to the "mayor meetings" where the mayors of less fortunate districts met to chat.

That's when I met him. Oliver Gaybacco Bish.

He was fat, fat was a slug. But he had great influence on all the mayors. He was rich, he was being trained to be the next mayor of his district.

So I loved him. Yes. I had a crush on Oliver Gaybacco Bish.

If I could marry the mayor of district five's son, then I would move out of this hell of a district. I wouldn't be trapped in district 12 anymore.

Before I knew it, I was ranting out loud.

"I'M GONNA DIE HOW COULD THE WORLD LET ME! DON'T THEY KNOW I'M A PRINCESS AND EVERYONE'S SUPPOSED TO TREAT ME LIKE A PRINCESS WHAT THE HECK THEY CAN'T DO THIS TO ME! MY DADDY WILL SAVE ME AND KILL THEM ALL! OF COURSE THEY ARE NOT SPECIAL SO THEY CAN DIE, BUT I CANNOT DIE BECAUSE I AM THE SMARTEST, PRETTIEST GIRL EVER AND..." I stopped to see a girl staring at me.

"It's okay." She crooned. "You are a princess. Your mommy will save you."

When I could hear no hint of sarcasm in her voice, I broke back into crying, even though I was older and bigger than her. "So save me!" I yelled at her. "You must save me! Because my life is worth ten of yours."

Gabby's pov- District 2 Female Tribute

I could put up with Karas' ranting for a while, but after that, it was getting on my nerves.

"It's okay." I said, trying my best to keep my voice soft and smooth. "You are a princess and your mommy will save you."

Instead of calming her down, it made her relapse into bawling like a baby.

"SO SAVE ME!!!!!!" She yelled, and I backed away a bit. She leaned in intimidatingly, shoving her dark, muddled face so close I could smell the horrible stench of her breath, "YOU MUST SAVE ME." She bellowed into my face. "BECAUSE MY LIFE IS WORTH TEN OF YOURS."

I had a feeling that my sanity was slipping away. It probably was.

I was saved by that girl called Metallica from district 9.

Metallica's pov- District 9 Female Tribute

I was trying to block the smoke when Karas ruined everything, barged in, and ran into a wall. Wow. Perhaps if she rammed that wall enough she could fall right through and die. I let out a small giggle at the cruel yet humorous thought.

Gabby quickly stopped helping and went to comfort Karas, who was crying and ranting in self-pity.

I growled a little. If Karas and Gabby wanted to get out, they could at least help a bit! Oh... Gosh. I strained to lift the heavy board, and cried out in pain as my good hand got trapped under it.

Luckily, the district three tributes, Corny and Rache, as well as the district eleven tributes, came to shove the wood in place. The smoke fought to get past, but only a thin wisps drifted past the tiny cracks. I sighed, and looked around. "Any ideas?" I asked.

Corny, the mathy guy from district 3 proposed a complicated plan to build a pulley and create a makeshift elevator.

"I guess." Gabby said, unsure. "Isn't that all we can do now?"

"We can have Karas ram the wall until she makes a hole and breaks her skull." I suggested.

"Go with the pulley." Gabby demanded, looking dead serious. Karas was a mess, she simply fell to the ground and cried again. We had to drag her to the side and ignore her senseless screams.

"Okay." I agreed. "Fine. Corny, you do whatever you want to do."

Corny made me and Gabby drill holes into boards, while Rache, the girl from district three threw rocks in the well of the elevator, calculating the echo time and the distance.

The district eleven people were to undo the knots on the existing ropes, while Corny just sat there and thought.

"Metallica?" Corny called. "You're good at climbing so you climb up the elevator and fasten this hook."

He held up a crude grapple, fashioned out of the leg of a desk. I stared at it in distaste. "How would you know I'm good at climbing?" I challenged.

"You're light. You're fast. Of course you can climb an elevator." He said.

"Fine." I agreed. With a running start, I latched myself onto the glass wall of the elevator's path, and climbed up. It wasn't too hard, because there were metal supports at regular intervals, and my metal hand helped me hold on tighter.

Yes, I have a metal hand. It was a horrible accident. I was holding a piece of bread, and a bunch of birds ate it, biting my hand as well. It got infected badly, and it had to be amputated and replaced.

As I reached the top, I fastened the hook as tightly as I could, winding a spare rope around to secure it, and slid down, much faster, by means of the rope attached to the hook.

When I swung back to earth, Corny smiled and had everyone tie knots. He looped a rope around the board, and threw it at the top of the elevator well. There was a snap as it stuck to the top. I stared up in wonder, how could he throw it so it would escape gravity and not come back down?

"Magnets." Corny grinned. He must have been reading my thoughts. Creepy.

When Corny was content that it was secured, he had us all grab some hatchet-like metal tool and line up in front of the elevator's open door. It felt like we were in kinder again.

I sniffed the air. It seemed clear enough, and there were no strange scents, but there still was an underlying layer of smoke that tasted bitter as I inhaled it. Luckily, when I looked around, there were no clouds of ash.

"I need to go first!" Karas wailed.

"It's not safe." Corny stated. "But you can try."

Karas strode out casually and stepped on the makeshift elevator as if it was safe. For a moment it held, and then I heard the rope unfurling as she fell down into the darkness with a high pitched scream.

Corny laughed and went to pull it back up. None of the people looked troubled except for Gabby.

"What about Karas?" Gabby asked anxiously.

"If she was dumb enough to step onto an platform that's literally hanging by one piece of rope, she can stay down there for a while to think about her stupidity and then we'll save her." Corny said. After that, Gabby seemed satisfied.

After Corny reset it, he instructed me to grab a rope and swing on, to never let go of the rope. I quickly understood. The rope that I held on to was a counterweight, to keep us from going down. If I pulled on the rope hard enough, we would go up. I gripped the rope and wrapped it around my wrist several times to ensure it wouldn't fall.

As more people stepped on, I found it easier, as more were sharing the burden.

"Move your hands down the rope." Corny instructed. "Slowly."

Slowly, the board we all stood on jerked down, inch by inch until we reached the district floor. Gabby used the hatchet-thing to force the door open and stumbled onto solid ground.

I sighed in relief. We had found a solution and survived- barely. Yay.
