(ChickLit Prompt 27)
Little feets rushing through the door. Their proud little owners shouting, screaming, laughing. The pace of my heart quickening with every fleeting moment. Millions of questions running through my mind.
Was she alright? What if she hurt her knees again? What if she couldn't find her way?
That's when I saw her. Somewhere in the middle of the ocean of everyone's tiny little bundles of joy was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen, running towards me with her adorable little feet, stumbling once in a while and my heart skipping a beat , there she was, my little angel. With a pool of tears in my eyes I laughed as she jumped up and down till I picked her up. Damn, they grow up so fast. It seemed like it was yesterday when I held her in my arms for the first time, the entire world told me I couldn't do it alone that I would regret this but in that moment I knew everything would be worth it. Now she is growing up so fast, clad in her pretty little uniform conquering her first day of school like a queen, I remember my first day, I was not this chirpy at all, hell I was a crying pile of mess.
"Now, you seem happy little lady. I am so proud of you" I said as I hugged her.
"Yeah. I made a f...fend" she said
"Oh! You made a friend? You want mom to meet your friend?" I asked.
"YES!!" She screamed.
I laughed.
"Look. That's her. TIAAAAAAAA" She shouted waving her friend over.
A little girl with beautiful long hair, turned around and her confused face lit up the instant she traced back the source of the voice. She made her way to where we were standing.
"Hey darling, I am Avril's mother" I said extending my hand.
She smiled and shook my hand like a poised adult in a tiny body and said "And I am Tia"
" That's such a nice name" I said and she blushed.
There was something so heavenly about these little ones. Their eyes were the mirrors to their hearts and their faces told honest tales of the journeys of their minds. It's a shame the big bad world strips us off this beautiful innocence.
As both the girls ran around and talked about their dreamy worlds I noticed Tia looking towards the road and her face looked all lost like an unwelcome sadness was engulfing her. I reached out to her and asked "What's wrong?"
"Dada didn't come" she said making a sad face that broke my heart.
Almost all the kids were leaving with their parents, I could understand how upset she was. So I went inside with both the kids and talked to their classteacher.
After a couple of calls she told us that Tia's dad was stuck in an urgent meeting and her mom was out of town.
Both the kids were really hungry and Tia was sad so I decided to turn her mood around, take them both home and cook them a nice meal. So I left my address and my phone number with the teacher to pass it on to Tia's dad so that he can pick her up.
Both the girls jumped into the back seat and I secured their seatbelts and started the car.
"So girls, are you ready for an amazing all girls day?" I asked
"YES" they both shouted in unison and they started giggling.
Katy Perry's firework started playing on the radio and we started singing along.
Laughing and giggling and the girls were dancing in their seats pretending to be rockstars. It was all so amazing. As we made our way into the appartment, little Avril almost dragged Tia to her room to show off her toy collection.
"Hey be careful both of you" I said.
I made them some nice salad and some orange juice and heated up the lasagna I had made before I went to pick Avril up.
"Kids, lunch is ready" I said.
In 5 seconds they were both at the table eagerly looking towards the kitchen like little birds waiting for the mama bird to bring them food. No doubt they were starving but they looked adorable.
I served them the food and they attacked it right away.
As we finished our lunch and I cleaned up the plates, both of them played music and started giggling and dancing, I couldn't help but smile, life was beautiful. I wondered how some people were so busy that they missed out on these little joys of life. These moments that made life worth living. That's when there was a knock on the door. So the dad was finally here. I was planning to politely tell him to NEVER pull this stunt again.
As I opened the door and saw the man standing infront of me I felt my entire body going cold. The words got stuck, thoughts scattered and jumbled and I lost all sense of time and space, all I felt was a dull ache that emerged from somewhere deep inside my heart from a wound that was long untouched. Almost forgotten but never healed.Standing infront of me was the man I once pledged my heart and soul and my entire existance to. Love like I had never known before. The kind of Love that I never knew human beings were capable of. It was surreal. Otherworldly.
I could see a similar storm brewing up deep within his eyes. The eyes that looked longingly at me a million times.
There he was, standing at my doorstep to take home his child and leaving the other one behind.
That's Life playing it's cards one more time.
