Quick as a rabbit I chased after him leaving him squealing and giggling loudly. His parents were in the kitchen looking at us out of the kitchen windows. Eyes following him and never looking at me. He told me about their talk at dinner last night.  He told me they wanted him to “grow up” and to “start being a big boy.”  He explained to me how he stood up for his me…and his punishment.  The faint red marks on his skin have not faded away.  I catch him and we both tumble to the ground laughing.

“Simon!” his Father barks from the doorway.  Simon sits up abruptly, no sign of the fun or happiness that just happened, “Yes Dad?” I glower at the ground. I hate how he says Dad.  I hate how he acts when his Dad is around.

“Get in boy.”  His father orders before slamming the sliding glass closed.  Simon gets to his feet and dusts his pants off.  Where is my Simon?  The one who was loud, always speaking his mind?  The one who played outside with me from morning until sundown?  Who talked to me all the time?  Who loved the messiness of the outside?  He walked towards the door and I call his name.

He stops and turns slowly as if he is reluctant to acknowledge my existence.  I walk up to him.  “Why?”  He flinches at how close I am but I do not care.  He is a smart boy.  He knows what I am talking about.  His turns his face away from me to look at the plants at the corner of the garden.

“I need to grow up.  I need to stop pretending.”  I frown at him.

“What do you mean, “stop pretending”?  I’m right here.”

“No you’re not!”  He shouts squeezing his eyes tightly he runs to the door quickly yanking it open.

“Yes I am!”  I scream at him stomping my foot on the ground.

“You’re not real! “  He screeches facing me from the doorway.  He is gripping the door tightly.  His dad pats him on the head murmuring,” It’s not real son.”  We stare at each other.  His eyes begin to glisten with tears.  Then I can’t see.  The world I saw is now a mix of colors blurred together.  The ground starts to spin under my feet.  I turn stumbling trying to keep up with it.  Our words blur together.

“I’m real. “

“You are my imagination.”

This is my last memory of him.
