The night grows colder. But I write regardless, my pen tearing across the page with the ferocity and speed of predator. I'm so close to finishing it, just one more piece. Everything is here, written down on paper. Every memory preserved within the fragile pages of this small, blue notebook. Our names are scrawled across the front, contrasting with the neatly printed title.
Alissida Pretorius and Sebastian Meadows.
Pieces of Time.
I finish, finally satisfied, and rest my hands. As I turn my stiff neck to look out of the window, I realise that night has fallen without me realising, and I listen carefully to the sound of branches creaking in the wind of this moonlit night, and gaze at the drops of water gleaming on the rolling leaves. I know this is the last time I will hear the whispering of the trees, the last time I will watch the rain splash against my window, the last time I will enjoy the peace of a star-flecked night sky.
Because now, my eyes begin to feel heavy, my head is drooping and the darkness ever so inviting.
I'm scared to fall asleep. When I fall asleep, I'll forget. I'll forget everything.
But the night calls, and my vision swims. The notebook, every page filled with writing, falls from my hand. It slides off the bed and lands with a gentle thud on the carpet. I send a prayer to the Heavens, just one final wish. To see him again, after all these years. To tell him that I never stopped loving him. But my eternity is drawing to a close.
It's unavoidable. I fight against it, but the memories begin to fade, the memories I've clasped onto for so long. But the night sings to me, beckons me, and I fall gently into
Death's
warm
embrace.
And this time, I am not afraid.
