Name: Maxine (Max)
-
Castiel knows Max very well.
He's known her as long as he's known Sam and Dean, and she was acting strange.
She sat really close to him and spoke to him in a way she never spoke to the Winchester's.
It was nice at first.
However, slowly, Castiel grew a bit of a protective care for Max, and their closeness became worrisome to him.
She was important to him, and she knew it, because when Max was in the bad place, Castiel was the one that got her out.
Max looks at Cas like he's the only person in the room, and often has to stop herself from making it weird.
She instead stared at the ancient-as-hell clock on the wall in front of her.
The clock became louder as the silence drowned them both.
It banged in her head, making her remember the bad days, when she was being...hurt.
She couldn't help but scratch the scars that snaked around her arms.
Cas saw her doing it and grabbed her wrist to make her stop.
"Oh hey Cas. W-What's up?"
He smiled awkwardly.
"Right now? Uh...a stable concrete ceiling."
She laughs softly, gently intertwining their fingers together.
Her shaky hand stilling in his, the other still trembling ravenously.
"Can I uh...Can I tell you something, Cas?"
Cas thinks about his answer, about to reply.
"It's really not that big of a deal..."
She says, using her free hand to shakily and nervously scratch the back of her head.
"Well then of course. You can tell me anything, Maxine, you know that."
She did know that.
Nevertheless, she was petrified of what was going to come out of his mouth.
Rejection being the only response she anticipated.
"Cas...I know that I've been acting weird lately. Trust me, I know. It's not because of...the bad stuff...It's because-"
"Of me?"
He wasn't wrong, so she nodded, making Cas hold his breath.
"Yes, but not because you did anything wrong Cas. Actually, it's the opposite, really."
Relief washed over him as he took a breath.
Castiel refused to read her mind, no matter how badly he wanted to.
She asked him to stop doing it, and he intended to do as she asked.
No matter how much it pained him to know that she was likely holding back so much.
"It's because, lately, I feel differently about you. I used to see you as this soldier that worked alongside the Winchester's like a dog, but ever since you rescued me, I've never felt closer to anybody. I've never felt safer with anyone by my side...do you understand what I'm trying to tell you, Castiel?"
Castiel's face goes blank, as a million things to say processed through his mind.
"Yes...I think that I do. You're attracted to me?"
Castiel squints, genuinely curious.
However, also confused as to why Max's face became flushed with redness.
"I-I uh...yeah I am. But, it's not just that. I think that I'm falling for you."
She studied his face that revealed no emotion.
His eyes met hers, and he stood up, and walked out of the room.

-
Castiel enters Dean's room after knocking and waiting for Dean to give him the okay to come inside.
He gets upset at Cas when he enters announced, so of course he stopped.
He sat quietly on Dean's bed for a few moments, looking up at the ceiling.
"Cas?"
Dean asks, confused.
"Hm?"
Castiel hums, not looking at him.
"So...did you just come in here to stare, or what?"
Dean questions, getting slightly annoyed.
"No...No, Dean, I need to ask you for advice."
He states, finally making real eye contact with Dean.
"Advice? About?"
Castiel awkwardly adjusts the way he's sitting to be facing Dean more.
"Girls...Maxine to be more specific."
Dean's eyes widen at the mention of Max's name and the context Castiel was using it in.
"Maxine? Like Max? Well...what?"
Cas touches his hand to his tie, loosening it.
"She said that she was falling for me...I don't know what I'm supposed to do, so I just left."
Dean sat in complete shock.
Not know how to respond.
This was Max, they were talking about.
Dean knows better than a stranger would that Daisy doesn't really do feelings.
She has a hard exterior because of the trauma she's gone through.
Falling for a dopey angel, who hasn't even watched a horror movie, it just was not Max.
"Wait...What do you mean by 'left'? You didn't not say something, right?"
Cas watched the conflicted expression on Dean's face.
"...is that a bad thing?"

"Oh dear god."

"Well is it?!"

"YES...yes. It is a very, very bad thing."
Cas was even more confused than he was before.
"Why is it bad?"
Dean got up from his bed to stand in front of him.
"Let me ask you something...Do you like her? Like the way she likes you?"
Dean questioned, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"I...I do."
Dean closes his eyes hard and drags a hand down his face.
"Max, the scariest girl I've ever met, just told you that she has feelings for you. God help me, Cas. I have no idea why, but she does."
Cas was slightly offended but stayed quiet.
"She told you something personal, putting her relationship with you at risk if you didn't feel the same way. Now, you've walked away, and she very likely thinks that you don't feel the same way...You probably hurt her pretty bad."
Standing up, and turning his back on Dean, Cas took in Dean's words.
"I feel terrible about that, I really do, but there are other concerns. I don't think dating Max would be especially wise. Having relations in this life is dangerous as it is. But, I have a price on my head, and being with her would only bring danger to her life. I love her, and I can't, because I love her."
Dean put his hand on Castiel's shoulder, making him turn around.
"I understand that bud, more than most, but what are you gonna do about it. You have a pissed to hell Max out there, and she's not gonna take what you're saying sitting down. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you and her will never be friends like the way you are now ever again."
The words 'ever again' rang in Castiel's ears.
Yes.
Protecting Max is important, but it conflicted Cas to know that Max wouldn't care for him the same way.
There was only one thing Castiel knew how to do, and he saw no other options.
"...I'm gonna wipe myself from her memories."
Dean had to resist letting his mouth drop open from the insanity Castiel just let out of his mouth.
"Cas that is a big move. A bad one too."
Cas didn't understand.
"I don't-"
"It's no bueno, dude. I don't know what you should do, but Cas, choose literally anything else."
Cas squinted, thinking.
"Should I just change a few memories? Like instead of me saving her, I make it to where you and Sam save her."
Dean sat in his chair.
"I don't like it, but honestly...it might work. Max'll never catch feelings for you. It'll be like...like it was before."
Castiel didn't know what else there was to do.
He told Dean to inform Sam of what was going on, and that he had to be careful with what he said around her.
They all had to be.
He waited until Max slept, and then snuck into her room, and changed their lives forever.
