Cassidy

After what Ashton told me about his brother having cancer, I decided to lighten up the mood with one of my favorite memories with my mom.

"When I was about eight my mom decided to pull me out of school randomly." I began my story, "She told me that today was such a beautiful day, and that it deserved to be spent outside not inside some classroom or office."

Ashton glanced over at me quickly, giving me a smile then turning back to focus on the road.

"She said that today we just had to go to the beach." I continued, "So we drove like two hours out to the nearest beach. And we drove all the way there blasting the radio singing as loud as we can to the songs, even if we didn't know the words."

"Oh my gosh! My mom would make up the craziest lines to a song if she didn't know the words." I laughed remembering her trying to sing along to those unknown songs.

"When we finally got to the beach, it was perfect." I said picturing the beautiful blue skies over the beach.

"The sky was perfect. It wasn't too hot but it wasn't cold. It was just perfect. Like picture the perfect beach day, that times a hundred"

"Sounds like the perfect beach day." Ashton chuckled at me.

"It was." I said glancing over at him. "The water was perfect. The sand wasn't hot. It was just perfect."

"I like the sound of that." He glanced at me with a smile.

"We spent all day there. Running in and out of the water with our boogey boards. We just spent the day laughing and talking about random crap." I continued on, "We then went to this little ice-cream shop right by the beach. You're never going to believe what happens next!"

"What?" Ashton said matching the same tone of excitement I had griping the steering wheel right for added effect.

"Okay so the shop must've just hired a new waiter, cause when he came to deliver our ice-cream he dropped all of the ice-cream on my mom!" I said trying so hard not to burst into laughter.

"No!" Ashton said trying not to laugh also

"Yes!" I exclaimed. "He dropped all of my moms pistachio ice-cream and my chocolate on her blue top!"

"What did your mom do?" He asked through his laughter.

"She bursted into laughter!" I said no longer able to control my laughs. "The look on the dudes face was priceless! She just couldn't get mad at him. He was about to cry!"

"No way!" Ashton said laughing.

"Yes!" I said trying to regain my breath and wiping away the tears. "My mom told him it was fine. That this stuff happens, and he shouldn't be upset."

"Did he lose his job?" Ashton asked calming himself down.

"No." I said smiling remembering what happened next, "He didn't. That's the thing about my mom, she was so kind and caring, that she told the manager that she did not want him fired. That if she came back and he was fired she would sue him."

"What?" Ashton asked sounding confused.

"I don't even know." I said laughing,"She just said that knowing she wouldn't actually sue, but she didn't want the poor guy to lose his job."

"That's nice of her." Ashton said.

"Yeah. That's what I loved-love about her." I cut myself off, "She cared about everyone. No matter who you were or what situation you were in. She cared. She once sat down and had lunch with a homeless guy for two hours, just so she could listen to his story."

"She sounds like a wonderful person." He gave me a small smile.

"You have no idea." I said smiling at him. "She is what I want to be when I have kids. A mom who just loves her kids endlessly through everything."

"When I was four, I accidentally broke this vase her grandmother gave to her when she got married." I begin to tell him another story. "She was mad, yet she didn't yell at me. She never yelled at me. Anyways, you could tell she was livid, at this point I was in tears. When you're little and you do something bad you automatically assume your parents are going to hate you."

"My mom told me it was okay that it was just an accident." I continued on with the story, "I told her through my four year-old sobs that I didn't want her to hate me."

"She told me, 'Cassidy, I could never hate you. Never. I will always love you, even when you make mistakes, I will be right there for you, no matter what. I may be upset with you, but I could never hate my precious Cassidy.'" I recalled her words, smiling through the tears that were now forming. Ashton didn't say anything, he just reached over and grabbed my hand and gave it a supportive squeeze. That was all that I need, knowing that he cared.

"I was proud to call her my mom." I said wiping the couple of tears that had fallen with my free hand.

"She's probably proud of calling herself your mom." Ashton said looking over at me giving me a warm smile.

"Thank-you." I gave his hand a squeeze and focused my attention back on the road, really glad with my decision on coming with Ashton.
