Starting anew

'I had to keep running, I didn't know who or what from but I just knew I had to keep running. Branches snapped underfoot and twigs scraped at my arms as I ran through dirt and brambles. I was breathing raggedly when I stopped at the sound of a quiet 'tap, tap'  but, started off quickly again when I heard someone call my name through the cold, night air.'
"PAISLEY!"

The dream started to disappear as I came back to consciousness to find ice-blue eyes staring at me through a slight curtain of freshly curled platinum blonde hair.

"What could you possibly be staring at?" I ask Cassie.

Cassie is my 12 year old little sister who annoys the absolute crap out of me, she has probably the second best looks out of my family. My mom would be the first. She has platinum blonde hair that she curls daily, ice-blue eyes that can pierce through your very soul and basically the body of a a 15-year-old athlete; long slender arms and legs, toned belly and sun-kissed skin from the summer and, a face that both dazzles you and annoys you because it's a mix between child and teen.

Cassie stands up straight with her hands on her hips and says, "Obviously someone who should be up and ready by now because it is the first day of their year 10 year."

I look over to my digital alarm clock standing  up on my bedside table, 8:15 am it reads. 'Shit! I was supposed to be up early to get mom to drop me off on the way and, so that I wouldn't be late on the very first day!' With worry probably written all over my face, I push back the covers of my bed and start rummaging through my closet, looking for something to wear.

"You know Paisley, you've still got some time to go. You don't need to make a mess of your room, I mean what would mom say if she were here?"

I twist around to find Cassie leaning on my door jam picking at her perfectly well kept fingernails--another thing I envy about her. I look at her with incredulity and say between my teeth, "What do you mean, 'If she were here'?"

Cassie takes a step out of my room and shrugs a shoulder, "Just that. Mom left early this morning to go back to work, something about finishing up business."

I look down at my Oppo to see the time, 8:20 am. 'I'm going to be late for school!' I groan inwardly 'and if I have to walk Cassie to school...' I look over to her hopefully and ask, "Is it possible if you can ask one of your friends mom's to pick you up?"

She sighs through her nose and says, "It's already done. Did you really think I would ruin my reputation so badly, to walk to school with you? No."

A small smile creeps to my lips at the thought of humiliating her in front of her friends at school. It quickly vanishes when my thoughts go back to picking out something decent to wear.

Approximately 15 minutes later I am dressed with my hair hanging limp over my shoulders. Cassie had left 5 minutes before with a quick shout down the hall to say she was out. I stand in front of my full-body mirror and check my reflection, 'Look, I wouldn't say I'm beautiful- that's my mom and Cassie- but I'm alright looking. I have long legs, a slim-ish waist, an average chest and, long wavy auburn hair. My face isn't fully mature but I have everything I need so far; full peach lips, a button nose, big eyes framed by thick, dark, long lashes and, tan skin that I got from my mum's side. Everything above is what I inherited from her. All I got from my dad was; my freckles along my nose, my bright emerald green eyes and, my tallness. He always used to say, "Paisley, if I ever 'go away' as such, remember, you'll always have a part of me forever. Don't you ever forget that, okay?" I would laugh at him and say, "but why would you ever go away, we're your family and we have to stick together. Right daddy?" He would give me one of his crooked smiles and hug me tight.' I look back at the mirror and wipe the tears from my face, I then study my outfit; Knee-high brown boots over washed-out blue skinny jeans and, An ivy-green t-shirt under my favourite, caramel corduroy leather jacket. 'Pretty good seeming I was in a rush'.
