"florida." my mom says quietly, almost as if she doesn't want me to hear.
my body feels week.
"florida?!" i screech.
"honey im so-"
"no! I can't leave here! I wonder how hailey's gonna feel about this, oh I can't wait until she finds out-"
"ALISON STOP." i turn to face hailey. I scrunch my eyebrows.
"I'm getting my own apartment and staying here. don't take this out on mom. she can't help it. she's doing what's best for us!" she shouts. I turn to my mother who now has many tears streaming down her face.
"why can't I just stay here and live with hailey?" I say, lowering my voice a little.
"im your parent, hailey is only 17, I can't leave her to take care of you. it's not her responsibility. we're not staying there permanently, we're just going for 6 months." she states.
I don't say anything more, I just spring out the door and over to hayes' house. both cars are gone so that means that either nobody is there or just he is. I knock quickly and loudly. I have tears streaming down my face but I don't even care.
"someone be here please." i mumble. seconds later the door swings open.
"hey baby- what wrong?!" he says pulling me into a hug.
"c-c-can we go sit down?" i stutter. he nods, shuts the door and walks me to the couch. he sits down and i sit in his lap with my head on his chest. he plays with my hair and rubs my back until I've finally calmed down.
"ready to talk?" he asks calmly, even though I know he's dying to know what's wrong. I simply nod and look him in the eye.
"i- im moving." i bite my lip holding in the tears.
"that's okay. we might not be neighbors anymore but we can still see each other." he smiles and tries to lighten the mood.
"hayes, I'm not just moving houses. I'm moving to florida. for 6 months." his smile slowly fades away and his face falls.
"we could try to make it work.." i crack a half smile.
he took a long pause as if he was trying to choose the right words. he finally took a deep breath and spoke again, but i wished he hadn't.
"i- i dont think we can."
