I inhale and step into the glass tube. The second I step onto the cool metal, the door snaps shut, sealing me off from the rest of the world. I give a cold look to my stylist Shritha and she simply nods her head. I assume it means good luck and I hear a suction sound. I look up and two metal doors are sliding open.
There is no going back. I never really had a choice in the first place 'but you volunteered' I remind myself.
No, now it just feels real. This is actually happening. I hope Danielle and Jerome survive the bloodbath. I can only pray Michone won't back down on her deal.
There is a mechanic screeching and the floor starts to lift from under me. I look concerned but Shritha only points up.
I glance towards the sky and the sun shines down furiously. The arena is starting to come into view and I see that the platforms all the tributes stand on are surrounded by wood. The capital must have gone full out this year because the arena looks like no other I have seen before.
There isn't a cornucopia. There is a small wooden island surrounded by water, with chests placed around the center. Wooden poles are jutting out of the ground and there is a canopy made of some jungle wood that has been covered in vines.
I see Jerome is only one platform to my right so I yell out "hey biggums! Too da left, too da left!"
Jerome glances towards me and chuckles, despite the looks of disapproval other tributes are giving me. I see Danielle on the other side of the island. Next too her is a tribute with wavy, dirty blonde hair. She looks very similar to Danielle and I see the number 7 on her outfit. She must be... Oh what's her name, she is from Jerome's district.
"Jerome, what's the name of the girl from your district?" I yell in his direction.
He thinks for a second then his face lights up. "Her name is Ashleigh, but I don't remember her last name. I think it started with an R."
I give Jerome a thumbs up and glance in their direction again. The two girls are chatting and I figure that if we weren't in our uh, "situation" they would be good friends.
I hear loud drums so I glance at the center of the arena. An orange hologram is counting down from 10 with a drum at each number.

A loud gong sounds, starting the games. I dive into the water towards the center. I'm not the best swimmer. District 4 tributes are already there but I am still early enough to grab some stuff.
There is a leather chest plate, some apples, and an axe. Wait.... AN AXE!
I frantically look around for Jerome in time to see a machete being swung at my face. The axe is brought up instinctively towards my face. The sharp blade only nicks my hands but it's bleeding heavily.
I swing the axe towards the tribute and I slice the skin across their belly. The male from district 9 bends over to clutch at the wound, so I bring the axe down into his back.
A cannon goes off. I had the first kill of the game.
I let out a choking sound. My survival instinct are in full gear now. I hear someone behind me so I turn and swing the axe. I dig the blade deep into the neck of the female tribute from district 3. She coughs up thick, warm blood that splatters on my face.
Her wide eyes look at me with terror before I swing the axe again, ending her painful existence.
I look around and see some unopened chests. I sprint towards the nearest one and see a helmet, various food, and leather backpack I can put everything in.
Jerome appears to my right and I toss him the axe.
"Your better with it then I am." I shrug
Jerome looks at the two dead bodies and the blood on my face, "are you sure?" He simply chuckles.
I see 3 out of the 6 careers glaring at us. They start to make their way in our direction.
"Jerome, we gotta go!"
I motion towards the beach and we both dive into the water, making sure not to lose any loot we collected.
Jerome and I run towards a break in two large cliffs and we see a huge ocean. I point in a direction and we start running. Even though I am from the careers district, I have no interest in joining them. The alliances are flimsy and someone could turn any second.
There is a narrow cave that I spot so we both run to the safety of that. I hear grunting and it sounds like a fight.
I grab a sharp rock and start moving forward with Jerome taking the lead with his axe. I can barely see but I notice blonde hair thrashing around. Fear washes over me because in my gut, I know it's Danielle. I grab Jerome's axe and without thinking I run forwards. I'm about to swing when I notice the frail girl is beating an unconscious body of a boy with.... An eggplant? What's with the weapon?! (Sorry guys, it's an inside joke. But the character is in fact beating another tribute to death with an eggplant🍆)
I drive the axe into the head of the brown haired boy and she looks up terrified. Then her expression turns into recognition.
"MITCH," she gets up and hugs me tightly. I give her shoulder a squeeze and return the hug.
(Ashleigh don't worry I'm already working on the next update and this might be a lot shorter because I don't have the word counter.)
