Elliot and I were inseparable. People tried to come between us because it seemed like every girl in our grade had a crush on Elliot at one point or another, but he made me a promise. Our friendship meant more to him than any of the other girls who just wanted to date him. He and I ended up even spending Christmas break together because Elliot's family went to New Jersey and he didn't want to go.
"You know that New Jersey is just over a bridge, right?" I questioned, as Elliot and I put lights on my Christmas tree.
"I know, but they are staying with my grandparents, and I don't want to stay in a house that smells like cats and mothballs." Elliot replied, and I smiled a bit as I plugged the strand into the wall.
"Another strand." Elliot spoke, as he walked over and stood next to me as we looked at the tree.
"Why? I don't want my eyes to burn because you made me put another strand of lights on this damn tree!" I exclaimed, and my parents yelled my name in unison from the kitchen and I sighed as I flopped down on the couch.
"Sorry!"
Elliot laughed as he sat down next to me, and leaned his head on the back of the couch.
"What did you get your parents?" Elliot asked, and I sighed.
"I got my mother a new blouse, and then I got my father a new holster for his gun." I whispered, and he nodded.
"What did you get me?" Elliot asked, and I shook my head as I stood.
"Nope." I spoke, and he groaned.
"Olivia! Please!" He whined, as I walked over and started to put garland on the tree.
"Elliot, I'm not telling you what I got you. Just drop it." I spoke, because I knew he'd think what I got him was stupid.
"Come on." He mumbled, as he stood and walked over to me.
"You are going to think it's stupid, so you are waiting till Christmas, which is only two days away." I spoke, and he groaned. He reached down and grabbed some more garland and continued to help me decorate the tree, but he wasn't happy about it.

The next night my parents had two Christmas parties to attend, so Elliot and I were at my house alone.
"I think your parents are getting you a puppy..." Elliot spoke randomly as we watched a Christmas movie.
"What?" I mused, and he smiled.
"I think they are getting you a puppy for Christmas. You were pestering them for one, weren't you?" Elliot asked, and I shook my head.
"No, I wasn't. You are just trying to get me confused, so I'll be willing to tell you about what I got you." I spoke, as I elbowed him in his side. He groaned a bit before reaching for the popcorn.
"Why won't you tell me? You know that I like the stupid little things you do for me." He smirked, and I rolled my eyes at his usual idiotic comment.
"What stupid little things do I do to you?" I mused, and he sighed as he thought.
"You help me study for all of our classes, and you taught me a month of Spanish so I could be caught up when I moved to this school." Elliot spoke, and I nodded.
"Neither of those were stupid or little. I spent a whole week trying to get some sort of knowledge of Spanish into that thick skull of yours." I shot back, and he laughed as he handed the bowl to me.
"You are always insulting anything that has to do with my head. Why am I still your friend?" He asked, and I shrugged as I popped a few pieces of popcorn into my mouth.
"Because. Something about us makes us a perfect pair of friends. Best friends as I've called you before." I spoke, as I tried to not blush. It was awkward sometimes to call him my best friend, because usually girls have girl best friends, but I have a guy best friend.
"I guess I'd call you my best friend. That's why I gifted you my friendship as your Christmas gift." He spoke, as he smirked.

Christmas morning came, and Elliot and I were up well before my parents were. He sat on the trundle bed and looked at me as I read and waited for my parents to come into my room.
"How can you read this early?" Elliot asked, and I looked over my book and right at him. He looked so confused, and it was kinda cute. He never did know why I did most of the stuff I do, but eventually he will.
"Because I can actually read the words on this page, and I bet you have never read a book." I grinned and he laughed as he climbed off of his mattress and climbed onto my bed. I sat my book down and looked out the slit in my curtain, and saw as it rained. It was a weird Christmas this year because there was no snow on the ground.
Elliot and I sat in silence as I heard my parents door open, and I stood up from the bed quickly, and walked over to my door. I opened it slowly and saw my mother walking down the hall, and she smiled when she saw me.
"Hey bean. Ready to open gifts?" She asked, and I quickly stepped from the doorway and hugged my mother tightly. As every other Christmas, the first thing I do is thank her and my father.
"Thanks for everything, Mom. And I mean everything, even the teasing." I spoke, as I buried my face into her shoulder. She chucked as she rubbed my back.
"I'd do this all again. As long as it meant you were safe and happy, baby girl."

My parents loved their gifts, and even though Elliot teased me about the dog, it actually happened. They got me a rescued German Shepherd, and she was the most beautiful dog I've ever seen. Elliot and I got side tracked as we played with her and thought about names.
But once the dog stopped licking my face, I quickly got up and grabbed the box with Elliot's gift in it, and I handed it to him.
"What's this?" He asked, as I sat back down and started to pet my dog again.
"It's your gift. I hope you like it." I spoke, and he quickly opened it.
Inside he found a t-shirt that he wanted, one of my favorite books that I knew he'd like, and best friend dog tags. They weren't anything special, but he is my best friend, and I wanted him to know.
Elliot looked at everything before looking at me and smiling.
"Thanks Liv. I love everything." He spoke, before handing me one of the dog tags, as his smile grew larger.
