Kat’s POV
Kat already liked Ms Watergrass. Her teacher’s friendly nature had the whole class eating out of the palm of her hand. She was funny, and somehow even managed to make a spelling test fun. She linked all of the words together into one big sentence that had the class in hysterics when she was done. Sadly, Kat couldn’t remember much of it, just something about flying pork chops.....
Kat was also aware of something else. The boy who was sitting next to Hayley, was almost definitely crushing on her. Hayley had introduced them, and it had gone something like this.
Hayley: “Kat, this is Jack. Jack, this is Kat”
Jack: “Nice to meet you Kat
Kat: (grabbing the collar of Jack’s shirt), “Hayley is my best friend. You break her heart, I will break your face”
Jack had been slightly wary around her now. Kat had no idea why.
Finally, the bell went for recess. As students streamed outside, greeting their friends, and wreaking havoc, Kat, Hayley and Azie walked towards the oval, to meet Holly and Maisy. They were about halfway there, when Kat heard the sound of raised voices. One, she could clearly identify as Holly’s. The other was deeper, obviously male, and unknown to Kat. Kat clasped her hands together, “Sounds like Holly’s been making friends!"
When they reached the oval, they saw Holly staring defiantly at a boy. He looked about her height, if not taller. He had brown curly hair, and was pretty athletic looking. She supposed he was attractive, but not the kind of guy she would ever go after. Kat shook her head, realising she had zoned out, and returned her focus to the argument.
Holly was speaking, “All I ask for is an apology, that’s it!” The boy laughed, and Holly glared daggers at him, “Come on Nate! Don’t be a douche!” Kat grinned, as Nate scowled at Holly. Suddenly though, his eyes lit up.
“Ok, I’ll apologise to you” he smiled, “On one condition.” Nate added,
“What would that be?” Holly asked, looking slightly worried,
“The condition is that you beat me in a race.” Nate grinned, looking confident.
“Ok then, let’s race!” Holly grinned. Nate chuckled,
“But that’s not all! If you lose, then you have to kiss me.” Holly suddenly didn’t look so confident, but she still looked determined, not to mention the fact that she was as stubborn as a donkey.
Holly lifted her chin, “You’re on.”
They took their positions at the starting point. The race was 100 metres, which was the distance they had agreed on. Kat and one of Nate’s friends, who was also from Kat’s class, she realised, were standing at the finish line, to determine the winner. The boy who was standing with her, introduced himself as Sky. Kat and Sky stood at the finish, watching and waiting. Hayley stood at the start.
“ON YOUR MARKS!” she shouted. Holly and Nate tensed. “GET SET!” Holly reached over to untie Nate’s shoelace, but he swatted her hand away. “GOOOOOOOOO!” Hayley shrieked.
Holly and Nate took off, sprinting towards the finish line. At first they were neck and neck, until Holly started slowly drawing in front. Nate ran as hard as he could, but in the end, Holly crossed the line first, about a head in front.
Kat watched Holly, watching to see her reaction to winning. Holly was grinning crazily, her eyes gleaming. She had an insanely big competitive streak, and to her, this win would be rather significant. She jogged over to Nate, who was smiling and shaking his head.
“I believe you owe me an apology” Holly smirked. Kat watched all this with extreme fascination, because it was pretty damn obvious to her that there was some serious romantic chemistry going on between those two. Kat chuckled to herself, until she caught Sky giving her a weird look. She smiled at him, and quietly whispered,
“How long do you think it will be before they’re going out?” Sky laughed,
“Give them a couple of days. If it hasn’t happened before then, that means they’re insane, because they obviously can’t see that they are perfect for each other.” Kat grinned at him, before walking over towards the others.
