"Do you like doing this?"
Their comfortable silence was interrupted by the sound of her soft voice, and he looked at her curiously.
"Doing what?"
She spread out her arms, as if she was trying to encompass the whole car in her arms. "This. Hanging out, late at night, in your car without actually going anywhere. Doing nothing, together."
"Well, yeah. I wouldn't be here with you if I didn't like it." A half smile materialized on his lips, and without thinking, he tangled his fingers through hers.
Unfazed by his show of affection, she plowed on. "Do you think we'll ever go anywhere?"
"Do you want to?" he asked, redirecting the question back to her.
Her eyes swept the horizon, almost hungrily, before returning to his face. "Of course I do. But right now... I'm good." Her voice became muffled at those last few words, like she knew what she was implying.
"Why?" he teased. He knew the reason (or at least had a hunch), but hearing her say it would validate everything he had worked for in the last few months. He gave her hand a squeeze, and to his surprise, she squeezed his back (she wasn't much of an affectionate person, so this was somewhat of a miracle).
A hint of a smile played across her lips, and she purposefully looked away from him. "I don't know."
"You sure about that?" The smile he always seemed to wear around her grew wider, although he tried to suppress it.
She looked out the window, even though there wasn't much to see but dim outlines and the faintest hint at where the horizon was. It was currently one in the morning, and they were parked in the outskirts of town... There wouldn't be much to see even if they could see outside. "No."
"There are certain people here that I'd stay for," she went on, while continuing to give the boy sitting next to her a growing sense of anxiety. She smirked, knowing how her words were affecting him.
"Like...?"
She squeezed his hand again. "You."
