I went up to the deck on the ship and the first thing that caught my eye was him.. the deck was full of the whole crew walking around in their own thoughts or talking to each other. Jim was our new member. He was working for out cook Mr. Silver and didn't have any friends. I was about to walk over to him, but stopped when I saw a big four armed guy push him back to the edge of the ship.
"Watch where you're going!" He groaned and walked further.
How rude, I thought. I watched as he glanced at a group of men talking to each other. I was curious myself and took the chance and walked over to him.
"Hi Jim!" I said.
He looked at me with a poker face, no smile or anything.
"Hey," He said and continued to clean the deck.
I watched awkwardly at him doing it.
"Sooo.. what do you think they're doing over there?" I said and looked the group. "Do you think they're making plans?"
He stopped with a sigh and looked irritated at me.
"I don't care honestly, they can do whatever they want to."
This kid wasn't easy to talk to. I glanced at the group again, maybe a little too long, because suddenly one of the looked at me with disgust.
"What are you looking at, freak?" He asked me and I froze when his head climbed down from his body and revealed another face on his stomach.
"Yeah, freak," the stomach said.
I looked at Jim who know also couldn't stop staring at them. Suddenly the sound of six long legs crawling down from a wooden pole got closer and both Jim and I turned around to see a big insect with big yellow eyes coming closer.
"Cabin boys shouldn't go around and stick their noses in others stuff," he whispered with a low deep voice.
"Why? Do you guys have anything to hide crookshanks?"
The anger filled all of the insects yellow eyes and he grabbed Jim by his collar and threw him at a pole and squeezed him against it.
"Maybe your ears aren't that good.."
Jim turned his head in another way I'm disgust.
"No.. but unfortunately my nose does.."
"You little..!"
And as he said that he slammed Jim against the pole one more time and suddenly the deck were all crowded with the whole crew that were talking and shouting about what he should do with Jim. I had to do something.. now!
I left them all and squeezed myself out from the crowd and ran down to silver.
"Silver! You have to come, now!"
He looked confused up from his pan.
"What's going on Miss?"
"It's Jim! He's in trouble!"
I almost didn't end the last sentence when he quickly ran past me and up the stairs and up to the deck. I rapidly followed him up to the deck with the others. I watched silver grab the insects arm and pressed it hard with his cyborg arm. When Silver did that the insect let go off of him and he landed on the deck. I ran over to him and helped him up. We both watched Silver threatening him. Suddenly it all turned silent when the second in command came rushing. And ripped the two of them apart.
"Mr Scroop!" He yelled. "There will be no use of violence on the deck. If this happens again you'll be spending the rest of your time under the deck, is that understood?!"
He looked with anger at Mr. Arrow, but nodded in agreement.
"Yes.."
"Now every men to your posts!"
Everyone left mumbling and slightly irritated. Silver looked at Jim and me and gave us both a wink, that's when I realized I was still holding around Jim's waist and let go rapidly.
"I'll leave him to you miss," he said to me with a smirk and then turned to Jim. "Be happy that you have her as a friend Jimbo, if it wasn't for her your throat would be slit by now."
Jim looked at me still with a poker face and I actually got a little upset.
"Start cleaning boy!" He shouted before walking away.
I watched as Jim started cleaning the deck again without saying anything.
"Umm.. you're welcome?" I said irritated.
He sighed and looked at me with a raised eyebrow.
"You know what? Never mind. Good luck getting ya butt out of trouble next time."
I was about to walk away when he suddenly cleaned his throat. I turned around and faced him.
"Thank you," He said. "I'm glad you told Silver. Thank you."
I smiled and.. he actually smiled back at me.
"You don't smile much do you?" I asked him.
He grinned.
"There's nothing much to smile about around here is there?"
I agreed.
"Do you want any help with the deck?"
"No," he said. "But it would be nice to have some 'smiling' company around."
I laughed happily and ran over to him and grabbed a mop and joined him.
