9:30 the clock,Devlin stared blankly into, read. She took the job as a barista at a local coffee shop because she thought it would be interesting to meet new people and learn new things, little did she know that instead she would be stuck behind an old oak counter as the seconds ticked by on the clock across the room. No one has come and no one has gone. Only a total of around twenty people have come in today and that was in the morning for the usual cup of coffee or tea before work. After getting bored of just sitting there she walked out from behind the counter and sat at one of the vacant booths along the window of the shop. She liked to look out the window at the people passing by and the occasional snow that would fall when the temperature suited.
Nearly ten minutes of sitting there the bell at the top of the door started to ring indicating a customer has come. Getting up from her seat, she made her way back to the counter to take the order of the customer who stumbled in and saved her from boredom. Looking up she saw it was a man who appeared to be no more than 21 standing in front of her. She couldn't lie to herself and say he wasn't attractive with his rather long curly brown hair that was pushed back by a dark blue beanie, and his rustic green eyes that peared back at her.
"Can I help you?" She snapped at him, though not meaning it the day had just taken a toll on her.
"Uh yeah I was wondering if I could get some hot chocolate if you don't mind." He stated,"It's rather cold outside."
"Oh sure sorry for snapping at you like that, it's been a rough day." Devlin said as she apologized at the poor guy that thought he had done something wrong.
"It's alright, I understand Devlin." He responded.
"Wait, how did you know my-" She stopped herself as the answer was obvious due to the silver plated tag that stands laying across her chest with her name on it. 'Smart move' she thought as she just embarrassed herself in front of him."Alright don't answer that. What name should I put down for this?"
"Harry." And with that he paid and sat at one of the tables in the shop without another word. Sighing Devlin went into the back and started to make Harry his hot chocolate, which she thought was strange because no one ever really came here for hot chocolate it was just the usual coffee or tea. After about five minutes she had finished and walked back out to give it to him.
"Here ya go." She said putting the cup in front of him and walked away to leave him in peace. But, before she could go anywhere she was stopped by a hand that grasped her wrist.
" If you don't mind, I know this may seem sudden and you look like a nice girl," He paused for a second to gather thoughts,"I was wondering if you would like to go on a date with me? I mean you don't have to I just thought maybe I should ask." He rambled on looking at his hands which made it obvious he was nervous.
"Oh um yeah sure I guess, that doesn't sound so bad." She replied deciding to give the stranger a chance.
"Thank you, what time to do you get off I was thinking we could go then?" Harry asked.
"In another hour you can leave and come back if you want." Devlin inquired.
"Yeah sure I'll come back in an hour and we can go yeah?" He asked both unsure, and to make sure she is agreeing with him.
"Yeah." And with that Harry left the shop as soon as he came in and Devlin was back to the old oak counter she had been sitting at for hours on end. Then next hour went by with a blur for Devlin as the only to to happen was an older lady that had come in and asked to hang a sign in the window for her missing dog. Before she knew it Harry was strolling through the door to take her on that date he promised. When he walked to the counter where she stood she could tell that he was nervous, like he didn't want to mess anything up.
"Hey, are you ready to go?" He asked.
"Yeah lets go." She said while walking out from behind the counter and following him out to his car. After opening the door for her, which Devlin thought was very nice, they were on there way. After about five minutes they pulled up to a park, and Harry got out of the car and walked to the trunk of the car. While he was getting what looked like a blanket and a basket out, Devlin also retreated from the car to stand next to Harry.
"Lets go shall we?" Harry said while grasping devlins hand and pulling her through the park to an open field that looked perfect for star gazing. After picking a spot and setting everything down, they both sat down and started to feast on the food that Harry had placed in the basket."I didn't know what you liked so I put mutual things that everybody likes, I hope that's Okay." He said hoping not to disappoint Devlin with the poor choice of food he had made. He didn't know her for very long but he felt as thought he wanted to be more to her, learn her likes and dislikes, learn who Devlin really is and what makes her tick. he had never felt this way about another person before and it frightened him that he had developed these feelings in such a small time of knowing her, he felt like he was naturally being rushed by none other than himself. Was he moving too fast? Would he get to attached like last time? The attachment drives him insane he can't let this happen yet again to him.Too many of these thoughts were flowing through his head that he wish he could stop.
"Hey are you alright?" Devlin asked the boy, who seemed to be out in a daze.
"Huh? Oh yeah sorry about that. So tell me a little about yourself." Harry said as a conversation starter. There Devlin went on about her life and her job, Harry finding out about her dog that she missed poorly from being away from home, and her being a college student and that she attended the college only minutes from his home. The more he heard about this girl the more his feelings grew on him. The butterflies that errupted in his stomach at the simple thought of her, it was driving him insane in yet a good way. It was dangerous, he was being pulled in to her being and he may not get out.
"And yeah that's pretty much it about me, what about you?" Devlin said after he long speech about her life story that Harry had only heard part of due to him spacing out and over thinking. From there Harry proceeds to tell Devlin about him not being in college, and living on his own with his cat 'Dusty' which she giggled at.
By the end of the night both of them laid close together on the blanket looking up at the stars. Devlin, pointing out certain constellations that she had known, and Harry watching and listening to her talk in little spurts about each of them. He found it interesting that she could be so intellectual, and that intrigued him even more. Nearly twenty minutes later Harry had noticed that Devlin had stopped talking and became rather still, she had fallen asleep. 'It's too much' he thought as he looked down at her body in slumber. ' If I don't pull away now it will be too late' he continued in his thoughts,'She is gonna remember me and it is already to late, I can't let this go on.' After gathering his thoughts he came to the conclusion, this must end.
After another ten minutes of contemplating he finally got the guts and pulled out a shiny silver 45' pistol from his coat pocket, and put it to her unconscious head.'Just do it' he thought as he let the darkness take over him and pull the trigger.
