I was sitting at the dinner table, it was my birthday. It was very quiet in the house, you could hear a pen drop from upstairs. I waited for my parents to come home to at least hear them say happy birthday to me. They had been gone all day. This is usually how my birthday was, they always forgot about it. My parents sometimes treated as if they forgot about me, forgot I was their daughter. I scrolled through Instagram to pass time, soon enough it was 2am. My birthday was over so I dragged myself up the steps to my bedroom. I laid my head down at my pillow, a few tears rolled down my cheek. I wiped them quickly before they hit the pillow.
What kind of parents could forget about their daughter's birthday? I soon enough fell asleep that night.
*The Next Morning*
Sun beamed through my window, living in Southern California definitely had it pros during the winter. I heard movement downstairs, finally my parents are home. Slowly I made my way out of bed to the stairs once again, and my parents were in the kitchen drinking coffee. My dad was in a suit and tie, and my mom was in slacks, heels, and a blazer.
"What are you two doing up so early? I was up until 2am waiting for you two," I said to their faces
"Mija, I know we were out late, but your father and I had business to take care of," My mom stopped talking and looked at my father. My father starts talking
"We have to talk to you about something," My dad said. He continued. " You know how your mom and I are part of the cartel," I shook my head yes. "Well you're 17 now, it's time for you to start helping out." My heart sunk to the floor, I don't wanna be apart of this, I wanna go to college and live a normal life.
"Well first how did you know I turned 17? You missed my birthday last night," Anger was in my voice.
"I'm sorry, but your mom and I had something to set up," My dad said to me.
"What is it?" I asked my parents.
"Sit down please Maria," I looked at my dad weirdly but I just sat down. He begins to talk again. "You know how a lot of my men aren't in the country?" I nodded yes. "Well I need them in the U.S.. But the problem is if I have them come here illegally they could risk the chance of getting sent back. I need the security of them being here for good..... thats where you come in this situation," he said. I looked at him, waiting for what he is gonna say. "I need you to marry them for a long enough amount of time to get their documents," My dad said seriously. I looked at him with a blank state this had to be a joke. He wants me to marry random men so they could get their citizenship.
"This is a joke right? You're giving me up for sale in a way. This is fucking bullshit!" I screamed, my mom just stood there and said nothing. "What do you think about this mom? Giving your daughter up to marry random men. You know what both of you can go fuck yourselves!" I turned around and marched back upstairs, I could hear my parents yelling at me to come back down but I ignored them I didn't care. I slammed my door close as hard as I could, crawling up in my bed I cry my eyes out. Just thinking about everything makes me feel worthless. I have lived no life, I was homeschooled I don't have any friends. I didn't get to go to football games, or any time of school event. Now, I have to spend the rest of my life marrying men I don't want to. I don't have a life it breaks my heart at the thought of it. But them suddenly my door opened, its my mom. "Listen here little girl, you will do what your father and I said. Don't you ever disrespect us like that again you got it?" I didn't say anything I kept my head down, but I heard her footsteps towards me. She grabbed a hand full of my hair and pulled upwards so I could look at her. "DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?" She yelled in my face. "YES!" I screamed back. She finally let go of my hair. She pulled my hair so tight and hard it hurts now. I felt more tears wanting to come out but I held them in, it was hard to do but I did it. Soon enough my red puffy eyes closed and my body fell asleep.
