Tuesday, July 1st. Drop off.

Maylin Elizabeth Matthews ✕ pov

"Mom, no please don't make me!" I sobbed into my knees that were held tightly against my chest. "Sweetheart, I don't have a choice, you need professional help." She stammered trying to keep herself together.

My parents both decided that my condition has gotten too out of hand, and said that it was only best for me to seek the help of the best in the state.

The car came to a stop meaning we've arrived at my destination. Written in black, bold letters on the front of the building were the words

Briarcliff Mental Institution

"Please mom, I'll get better on my own I swear" I sobbed harder. She shook her head and looked at my father with pleading eyes. "Maylin, c'mon honey." My father cooed, ushering me out of the car.

I hesitantly stepped out of the car and shoved my hands in my pockets of my sweatshirt.

They don't love you .

They wouldn't have brought you here.

Run Maylin.

"Stop! Stop talking to me!" I screeched holding both sides of my head.

My mother looked at me sympathetically and began rubbing her hand up and down my back. "C'mon sweetie, let's go get you some help." She whispered walking me to the front doors of the building. I kept my eyes glued to the floor, not wanting to face anybody.

"Ahh you must be Maylin Matthews?" The woman behind the front desk chirped. She seemed way too happy to be working here.

After exchanging paperwork, my parents were given 5 minutes to say goodbye. It mostly consisted of them trying to tell me that this was a great opportunity and that they'd love me, but I ignored it. The voices were right, if they loved me, they would leave me here to rot, because you don't come here to get better, you come here so there's less chaos in the people you loves life.

"Just please, tell Katherine I'm sorry I couldn't be there for her as a normal little sister, and that I love her." I sniffled. They nodded and with that, they were gone.

"Miss Matthews, would you please follow me to your room." The woman behind the desk stated as more of a command. I followed close behind her down a hall and up a set of stairs. "Here's your room, you have a roommate also. You two can get acquainted and she can explain the rules to you." And with that, the woman handed me my bag of clothes from home and left.

"Hi, I'm Alaina. I'm your roommate I guess. But don't worry, I'm not criminally insane. I'm only in here because of my insomnia." She smiled. "Maylin. And id rather not explain why I'm in here." I politely replied.

I didn't feel like it was some strangers I just met business to know exactly why I'm in this place.

"I totally understand Hun. This place, is like hell on earth. You're gonna hate every living second in here, anyways, most of the other kids here are harmless. " she shrugged.

"Most?" I questioned putting my bag of clothes under my bed. Putting them in my provided drawer was not my top priority, although I was glad they didn't make us mope around here in ugly colored gowns.

"There's only really one kid you'll need to stay away from, his names Luke and that's all I'm going to tell you because that's all you need to know." She stated.

My mind wondered about this dangerous 'luke' kid. I wondered why all she would tell me was to stay away from him and that was it, I wanted to know what he did or continues to do that landed him in here.

"Okay now quit pondering, we have rules to go over." She smirked. I chuckled nervously and sat at the edge of my bed, turning my attention to her.

"Rule number one: No touching. No contact with any other patients. Even if it's just a reassuring hug, never lay a finger on anyone. Although I tend to break that rule a lot, I'm a hugger." She whispered that part.

"Rule number two: don't be late to breakfast, lunch,or dinner. And don't be late to the therapy sessions. They sometimes write up shots for you that are like tranquilizers. They put you straight to sleep, then lock you in isolation. These assholes are very strict." She rolled her eyes.

I already took a liking to this girl, she seemed extremely laid back and normal to me and I think that's what I need. "And last but not least, stay In your room after lights out." She finished.

"Gotcha." I nodded.

I grabbed a pencil and a piece of paper from my bag and crawled back onto my bed. I decided, there's nothing else for me to do right now so I'll write Katherine.

Dear Katherine,

It's been awhile eh? How have you been? Good I hope. I on the other hand, not doing so hot. I don't think you'd be the type to judge but, this situation is different. Your not gonna see me for awhile. Dad and my mom thought it was best to check me into a mental institution. I just need help, that's all.  I wanted to fill you in. I felt as my sister, you should know. I love you Katherine.

Love, Maylin.

I folded the paper up and shoved it under my mattress.

"C'mon kiddo, it's breakfast time." Alaina smiled opening the door. "How old are you Alaina?" I asked getting up from my spot on my bed. I walked through the door waiting for her to catch up. "19. How about you Maylin?" She asked. "17." I sighed following her into what I made out to be the cafeteria.

"Stick close to me, I don't want you to accidently bump into Luke."she whispered In my ear. I nodded and followed close behind her. I lost my appetite ever since I got here so I waited for Alaina to get her tray and sat down. My eyes scanned the room but all I saw was a bunch of normal kids, or at least as normal as you can get in a place like this.

I looked straight ahead of me seeing a boy sitting at a table all alone wearing black skinny jeans ripped at the knees and a gray tee shirt on. His blonde hair was up in a quiff and he had a black lip ring. You'd figure they wouldn't allow sharp objects.

His piercing blue eyes met mine but before I could look away I could see his lips curving into a slight smirk.

"Maylin!" Alaina exclaimed quietly. I turned my head to the side avoiding his gaze and furrowed my brow at Alaina. "What?" I finally asked.

"Maylin," she paused. "That boy that was staring back at you..  was Luke."
