"good morning!" chirped a waitress as she placed a menu in front of him.

"what's good about it," he muttered as he looked at her. her smile faltered and he almost felt bad, but soon enough it came back full force.

"is that a rhetorical question, or a genuine inquiry?"

he was taken aback. "uh... sorry?"

"well, if it's a genuine inquiry i could answer it, but if not, then..." she shrugged.

he did a quick assessment of her: perfectly arched eyebrows, symmetrical winged eyeliner that must've taken time to accomplish(not that he knew much about makeup), ombre hair in a french braid rather than the standard ponytail every other waitress was sporting, an aqua uniform rather than everyone else's electric blue(it complimented her eyes better, he thought), and a nametag that had a doodle of a little robot in the space where her name should've been.

he decided she was an interesting character.

"it is. it is a genuine inquiry, as a matter of fact."

"well, today is a beautiful day-"

"it's raining-"

"-because for those of us who tend to enjoy the rain, it's wonderful," she said with a pointed look at zayn that said 'don't interrupt me'.

"you woke up this morning, and sadly many others around the world didn't have the same fortune. you are alive and young and healthy, you can easily walk, skip, run, and shout for joy. you're not reduced to a hospital bed, or a wheelchair, and your heart has been going strong for many years, and hopefully many, many more. i'm sure you have people who care about you, and you have friends who would miss you dearly should something happen, and most important of all... to someone out there, somewhere in the great unknown, you mean the world to them, and they'd do anything with you and for you, and i think that's pretty awesome." she finished with a grin.

her accent definitely came out when she spoke whole paragraphs, but he liked it. he couldn't quite place it though. but he wouldn't mind listening to her speak all the time.

"look, i don't wanna burst your bubble or anything, but today's not that good. not for me anyway. "

she seemed undeterred. "well i just told you many reasons why that's not tr-"

"my girlfriend broke up with me," zayn blurted out. he did not mean to say that. he honestly wasn't even that broken up about it. he only felt sadness because he had to find a way to tell his parents without them blaming him completely. and because he had to find another girl soon(and possibly he wanted some of the waitress' pity too. but he'd never admit it). her eyebrows raised and her mouth formed an 'o' shape.

suddenly she turned and left.

~·~

"if it makes you feel any better... i really like your blond highlight."

zayn gave her a confused look, then a small smile made its way onto his face. apparently when she left, it was to get them both some tea and a cookie for him. then she sat down and listened to him explain everything that happened. and he told all.

well, enough for her to understand, because he wasn't really the type to dish out all his problems to just anyone.

he may or may not have left out the part where his girlfriend was a newbie actress hired only because his parents were authoritative and demanded he find a suitable girlfriend one way or another, but oh well..details, details.

"so does it?"

"does it what?" he asked.

"does it make you feel any better?"

he contemplated for a moment before telling her honestly, "yes. well, a little. it's definitely an ego boost, not that i need it."

she giggled lightly and he smiled wider.

"i never got your name."

"just call me whatever you want."

"whatever?" he asked. "so I could call you... darling. sweetie. cutiepie?" he asked in an attempt to get a reaction from her.

she shrugged in response.

"i have to go. see you around," she said with a departing wave as she went back to work.

"see you around, my little deviant," he muttered.
