"I promise."
"Pinky swear?" Phil stuck out his pinky, holding up his other hand.
"Friends forever!" He giggled as she connected their fingers. Her face fell when their skin touched.
"What's wrong, Cat?" Phil let his hand fall as she pulled back her arm. Cat didn't answer as she stood up.
"What's wrong with you?" Phil tilted his head, staring at her.
"Wha-What do you mean?"
"I can't...You're not..." She ran off leaving a confused and dejected Phil.

"What's a Talent?" Phil turned towards his mom, who was currently choking on her water.
"Where did you learn about that?"
"Some kids at my school were talking about them, how one of their sisters got sent away."
"Well um, a Talent is sorta like a superpower. Only certain people have them. You'll learn more about it in high school," she finished quickly.
"Do I have one?" She didn't answer and quickly changed the topic. Phil didn't understand why.

"Now, who knows about Talents?" Mr. Haires rubbed his hands together, looking at them all. Phil adverted his eyes as a quiet girl raised her hand slowly.
"Talents are special abilities that certain individuals have. They usually get them in primary school." Mr. Haires only nodded.
"But why do we only learn about it in high school?" A different girl spoke.
"NonTalented don't have Talents, so there's no point in teaching them when they won't even understand. And the Talented are sent to a private school." Mr. Haires praised her and continued talking. Phil leaned against his fist, staring out the window. Who cared about this stuff anyway? They weren't Talented, why did it matter?
*Present Day*
