"Mom!" Ava called from downstairs.
Damnit she can't hear me from here.
Ava walked over to the front door and pressed a button on the machine plastered to the wall. The intercom system responded with a ding and Ava spoke.
"Hey Mom I'm going out." Ava spoke into the speaker.
After a few moments, the intercom buzzed and her Mom's voice broke through,
"Okay sweetie. Tell that maid to clean the pool on your way out."
Her mom always referred to the maid as 'that maid'. Those two words never failed to make Ava's blood boil. She made a mental note to clean the pool herself later. Ava turned to the door and waved to Lucy, their maid, before walking outside.
After placing her bag on the passenger seat next to her, Ava pressed the button next to the steering wheel to start the black Mercedes. Ava sighed as she dropped her hands to her sides, caressing the smooth, white leather of the seat beneath her.
"God I hate my family." She whispered.
She mentally added that to the list of things she couldn't say in front of Aria. She didn't want to seem ungrateful...even though she was. Aria had run away from her abusive father and alcoholic mother two years ago. Ava secretly knew her best friend was jealous of her...and not just for her money. She had a family that wasn't...well....broken.
God what is wrong with me this morning? Ava bought to herself. She shook her head back and forth as if shaking her hideous thoughts away before lifting up the parking break and speeding out of the driveway.
Before she knew it she was belting out Billie Eilish as she pulled into the cracked and broken driveway of Tyler's house. Ava turned the radio off and honked the horn gently, signaling for Aria to come out of the house and join her. Ava waited, her palms getting sweaty. She hated being here. Something about the house scared her...she didn't know what exactly. After a couple minutes, the front door of the house was yanked open. Tyler poked his head out of the house and glanced around before he laid eyes on Ava. She swallowed hard. Ava watched Tyler grab Aria by the shirt collar and shove her forward, causing her to stumble out the front door. Aria regained her balance and dusted herself off before walking to the car. She pulled the passenger door open and moved Ava's purse behind them before sitting down.
"Hey. You okay?" Ava asked, very concerned.
Ava was wearing a lot of makeup today. She almost never wore makeup.
"God Ava, I'm not a lost puppy, Jesus just drive." Aria said, fake laughing.
Ava joined in with a forced laugh of her own and pulled out of the driveway.
They drove to a nearby diner and sat down to order. A waitress asked what they wanted and both girls ordered milkshakes.
"So," Ava began, leaving an awkward pause to fill the air. "What's with all the makeup today?"
Ava could've sworn Aria's face went pale for a moment before she answered,
"I felt like trying something new." She said, sipping her chocolate shake.
Why is it so awkward today? Ava thought.
"Hey, waddaya say we drive and see where the road takes us?" Ava suggested.
Aria smiled and looked up at her friend, "Knowing you, we'd get lost in the first ten minutes." She smirked.
Ava laughed in the middle of a sip of strawberry milkshake, causing the pink liquid to shoot out her nose and land on the table. The two girls erupted in laughter. After cleaning up, Ava and Aria walked back to the car. They had been talking and laughing the whole way. As they buckled up, Ava's smile faded.
"Aria...I'm not sure I like Tyler so much." She announced, looking at her best friend.
"That's okay. You don't have to." Aria replied, shrugging her shoulders lightly.
"Well," Ava began, starting the car, "Do you like him?"
There was a long pause before Aria finally replied,
"Yeah."
Ava wasn't convinced.
"Hey Aria," Ava said, turning her attention to her, "If Tyler ever...ya know....hurts you..."
"You can't be serious." Aria said, laughing the comment off. "Tyler's a great boyfriend okay? He wouldn't ya know...do that."
Ava pulled out of the parking lot, not responding. She knew Ava was lying, but she didn't know what to do. She decided to just leave it alone for now.
Hours passed and before long, it was dark. The girls continued to drive until it was almost midnight. Ava stopped at an intersection and noticed two very hot guys on the other side of the street. There were no other cars around.
"Hey Aria," Ava said, smirking, knowing there was no possible way Aria would do what she was about to say, "I dare you to get out of the car and moon those two boys." She giggled.
Aria shook her head, laughing.
"No way." She smiled, "You're insane Ave." She said, looking at her friend.
"Bet." Ava said, smiling.
Aria rolled her eyes. She was one of those people who had that, 'well you said bet so now I have to do it no matter how stupid it is' attitude.
After absolutely zero convincing, Aria got out of the car and ran across the street.

It was almost one in the morning and Ava could tell Aria was anxious. Ava knew Tyler didn't like when Aria was out late, so she was practically speeding to get her home. She didn't want to be the reason Tyler hurt Aria tonight. Ava pulled into the driveway, the car bumping up and down from the broken cement, and parked.
"You can always stay at my place tonight." Ava suggested, worried.
"I'll be fine." Aria sighed, getting out of the car.
"Love you!" Ava waved.
"Love you too." Aria shivered.
It was eighty degrees outside. Even Ava could tell she was shivering out of fear. Before Ava could tell Aria to get back in the car and come home with her, Aria had vanished into the house and out of sight. Ava said a silent prayer that her best friend would be save tonight. Her prayers didn't help.
