* Amelia's POV*
As soon as the words left my mouth, Emma's mouth popped open in shock. She put her hand over her opened mouth and she stared at me in disbelief. I couldn't blame her, a part of me couldn't believe it myself. I had thought it to be ridiculous when Emma had suggested it during our town trip. Running Away?. Eloping?. How could I?. It was utter madness. But now? When Mother had left me with no other option?
I had to do it.
Marrying Adlard would mean saying goodbye to Barrett.
And I wasn't going to do that.
"What?", Emma finally managed to blurt out.
"I am going to run away with Barrett like you suggested, elope, Emma", I answered.
" Amelia, are you sure?", Emma asked, in disbelief," Where will you go?"
" That's why I am going to meet him right now", I replied, opening the laces of my bliaut and pulling it off.
Who knew Emma's mouth could open more wider in shock?. But it did.
" Amelia, it's!...um, past sunset", Emma fumbled," So, that's pretty..late?"
I rolled my eyes," Are you telling me or asking me?"
" Telling you!", Emma exclaimed, more confidently this time," Besides Barrett would be sleeping right now, and how are you going to get past your mother and father-"
" You leave that to me, okay?", I cut her off and folded the bliaut, placing it at the bed neatly," How about you change out of your bliaut and come for supper for now?"
Emma opened her lips and then closed them, several times, dumbfounded. Finally, she pursed her lips and nodded, pulling the laces of her bliaut loose.I smiled and went out of the room. But the second I did, my smile instantly faded. I trusted Barrett to find a suitable solution to this problem, but he didn't exactly have a house of his own we could stay in or run to. I had told him several times that he should start saving money to build our own house but he had been putting it off, and things are bad right now anyway due to the war. What if we had nowhere to go?....
" Amelia!, why are you standing there?,come sit and eat your dinner", Mother came out of the kitchen, bringing food," Where is Emma?"
" Right here, Mrs Roth", Emma smiled as she came out of the room, her hair loosened and wearing only her chemise.
Dinner passed in a blur, Father asked me about our trip to town but any excitement that I would have had earlier had vanished into thin air. I couldn't muster up any happiness at the moment, so I left the talking to Emma. Sometimes I was really happy that I found Emma, I mean the circumstances that framed it were tragic, but it's like she is the sister I never had. And she actually gives sound advice!. She was way smarter than any girl I had met and despite being my age, she was a lot more independent and intelligent than me.With Mille gone, I had only Eloise and Emma left, and Emma had become more closer to me than Eloise. Even though it had been only a month and a week or two, she and I went through the same struggles I went through like having my mother arrange our marriages to strangers.
She kept shooting me worried and anxious glances at dinner, chewing her food slowly and watching me like a hawk. I was annoyed at Mother's constant chatter about the Adlard fool, god I hated his face now!. I had just managed to avoid him in the town and now he's coming over in three days to ruin my life forever.
"Amelia!"
I jerked up from my thoughts to my mother frowning at me," What's wrong with you, girl? You have barely touched your food and you are not responding to me!"
