I watched the colony wander everyday. I kept my eye on him constantly. It was my duty to protect him, no matter how much I hated him. Everyday he would go to the shore and watch the pale faces go about their duties. He was young and curious, I knew.
He got very close to them one day. I confronted him before he could go further. He turned to me and said "Ashwin, those people over there? They are new." I looked to where he was looking and saw many people getting off boats. Walking away from the ship, a couple of men were bickering while another younger man led in front of them quietly. "Ashwin, they are like us, but they do not belong here. What are they doing here?" I crouched down to his level and he turned to look at me. "I love you like a brother, and I know you are curious. Those men come from far away across the great sea. You are made into the likeness of them. You belong to them. One of them is your master. I know it is hard to understand. We were raised to believe no one could own the land, no one could own us, but these men are different. They fight and steal to have us. They are trying to enslave us."
It has been many months since I told the boy. Those men ended up exploring, and most of us kept in the shadows. We have seen this for hundreds of years. The pale faces will come, they will explore, then they will leave forever. These will do the same. The boy's curiosity has caused trouble. He was spotted by the younger man. I told him to be more careful, but I don't know.
I followed the boy as he hiked down the steep hill towards the river. He hid in some bushes and watched the men. I could see it was a game to him. But then they saw him. They tried coaxing him out, but he ran to me. I picked up the crying boy and we ran together back to the tribe.
The boy went on another adventure to the same spot the next day. He sat around and looked, not knowing of my presence. Then I saw one of the men come. I held my breath as the boy went straight up to him and they talked. I was not close enough to hear. The man picked up the boy and was ready to leave. I ran towards him.
How could this happen? I am supposed to protect him, not give him away! I ran out of the trees into the open. I wanted to kill this man, make sure he would never touch the boy again, but I didn't have my bow. The man turned to look at me. He lifted one eyebrow. I glared at him as the wind swept at my long braids. With the wind came a whisper, "It is all right." I closed my eyes and felt the wind brush my side and ruffle my hair. Mother Earth has a plan for this boy, I must let him go. I opened my eyes and nodded to the man. He nodded also and took the boy away. I would never get to see him for a very long time in very undesirable circumstances.
