My grandmother used to tell me stories of a time when humans could walk freely, when paranormal creatures hid in the shadows, when humans weren't enslaved, and when we were the ones who enslaved the 'lesser' beings. A time when–although the air wasn't clean, rivers polluted, and species were dying out–we were free to do as we pleased. We could find love, have a family, and die on nature's terms. However, the world changed in 20XX, due to an excessive emission of greenhouse gases. Weather patterns became more extreme. Massive storms such as tornados, earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes scattered the earth. Crops dried up or were flooded, resulting in famine spread globally. Only the wealthy were able to eat. A massive nuclear war broke out between nations, in hopes that they may obtain more food to feed their starving people; but like all wars, it caused more devastation. Countries crumbled. The human population plummeted from ten to two billion in less than fifty years, and they were vulnerable to the supernatural creatures they had shunned from society for centuries. The paranormals enslaved humans each species claiming a sector of the earth as their own. My grandma says this was Nature's way of restoring balance, cleansing the world of the ones who tried to destroy it. She says the paranormals took advantage of nature will. She says they will pay for their actions in time as well. But I call bullshit. My grandmother is an optimist, but I'm tired of waiting.
