She twirled around, playing with the thin, white ruffles on her knee-length blue dress. She wore a bright smile, one that would remind a person of a little kid getting candy after having a tantrum. She looked herself over in the mirror for the 4th time, finally satisfied with her looks. She ran out of her room, sitting on the bench around the corner of her bedroom door. "Almost ready, Iris?" Called a feminine voice from behind a door across from where she was sitting. Iris spoke softly to her in reply, "You don't have to yell, mother. I'm right here." Iris giggled, adding on "But yes, I'm ready." She smiled brightly again, slipping on her black flats. Iris' mother, Beatris, came out from the bathroom, as told, in front of Iris. "Good, I am too." Beatris walked past Iris, going into the kitchen. Her white heels clacked against the tiled floor as she walked over to the counter, grabbing her car keys. She sighed in slight annoyance, grumbling to herself "He said he would be here in time, liar.." Iris perked up. "What was that, momma?" Beatris retaliated with a quick and shakey "Don't worry about it Kiddo. Out." She went over and opened the door up for Iris. Iris stepped out and did a small curtsy, whispering a small 'thank you'. Beatris just smiled a little, heading out onto the porch, closing the door behind her. Iris ran down the porch, excited for church. Beatris slowly made her way to the car, unlocking it, and stepping in, seating herself. Iris sat in the seat behind her moms, smiling and swinging her legs. They both buckled themselves up. Beatris put the key in the ignition, starting the car. They then made there way to church. They arrived at church about 10 minutes early. They walked in, heading up front in the pews. A few minutes pass and Iris tugs at her moms' sleeve, whispering a soft, sad sounding "Mommy?" She turned over and gave a soft, gentle smile, "Yes Honey?" "Where's daddy?" Beatris took a moment to respond. "He's on his way, don't you worry." Beatris hugged Iris tight, in a reassuring, motherly way. "Ok!" Iris giggled again. Beatris let go of Iris, putting her hand on Iris' shoulder. "I'll be right back baby, stay right here, mommy needs to do something important." Iris was such a gleeful child. She smiled and nodded, turning and facing the podium. Beatris stood and headed outside, grabbing her phone out of her pocket. She called her husband, the father of Iris, Cyrus. He didn't pick up. Beatris tried again, finally getting an answer from him. Beatris held back a yell, but spoke loudly, and in a clearly angry tone. "Cyrus! Where are you?! You promised Iris you would be here, and she's super excited to see you! She's getting upset!" Cyrus' voice was hoarse and low. "I'll be there." He sounded emotionless, cold. He hung up. Beatris let out an angered grunt, nearly throwing her phone. She slipped it into her pocket, tapping her foot on the ground while breathing in and out heavily. She took a minute to compose herself. After she was assured to be calm again, she headed in, sitting next to Iris. "Honey?" Beatris said quietly. "Mommy!" Iris jumped up, hugging her mom tightly, enjoying her moms warm presence. Beatris hugged back but looked at Iris with a discoursed look. "What's wrong mommy?" Iris tilted her head, putting a hand on her moms cheek. Beatris whispered "Well uh.. Daddy might not be coming." Iris' smile faded, and she let go of her mom, her eyes watering slightly. "Why.." Is all Iris says, looking down at the floor. Beatris bit her lip, choking back a small whimper. "He.. He's just busy baby.. Don't cry, please? For mommy? You'll see him, just not till maybe after church, okay?" Iris doesn't say anything but rather nodded slightly and wipes her eyes. "Okay momma" Beatris smiles slightly. They sit there in silence for a few more minutes, as people slowly start to arrive. The pastor walks up to the podium and puts his hands together, giving a bright smile. "'Morning everyone!" Church service starts. They do the same things that they usually do on a Sunday morning. Cyrus doesn't show up to be there with his family. About an hour later, Iris and Beatris exit the church. Iris looks up to her mom and speaks in a soft tone "Mommy..?" Beatris picks up Iris "Yes sweety?" "When can I see daddy?" Her eyes were watery again, as she shoved her face in the crook of her moms neck. Beatris stroked Iris' hair, then kissed her head. "I'll call him on our way home, ok Honey?" Iris wiped her eyes, and whispered a shakey "Ok mommy.." And just clung onto her mom. Beatris walked to the car with Iris in her arms, an upset look plastered on her face. Beatris set Iris in the back seat, and buckled her up, for she had fallen asleep. Beatris then herself got in the drivers seat, buckled up, and pulled her phone out. She dialed Cyrus' number, and called him. He picked up.
