The Beginning of The End

It can't be...

Fitz isn't gone. He CAN'T be gone! It's a nightmare, a hallucination, something!

The cogs in Jemma Simmons' brain ran on 200kmh when Mack and May got back. Mack came to see her in her makeshift lab/hospital-room. His expression said it all. No words were needed. Everything seemed to slow down to Jemma's heartbeat rate.

Mack's final steps at the door nearly deafened her, as she heard it like thunder. She turned to him, happy and excited to see him, May and Fitz back from the field. Her hope was crushed as soon as she glanced at the big man's face.

She started weeping. It can't be, she thought.

Tears ran down her face, burning her skin, cutting through into her heart like razor-sharp knives. After all they've been through, all the suffering, the misery, the perils and hardships, the bloody cosmos finally had the final laughter. They ARE cursed.

Mack told her that Fitz was crushed under falling debris. That a gigantic piece of metal slashed through his stomach and gutted him, leaving him no chance of survival. He said that Fitz couldn't feel his legs, that his hands shook like they've never shaken before, that Fitz tried to stay level-headed and calm and didn't panic. None of that helped Jemma.

Fitz was on her side for over a decade now. They've been at eachother's side through the academy, at the lab and on the field. They've moved the heavens for eachother, put everything at risk, and experienced heartbreak, grief and sadness. It can't be over.

She wanted to scream. She wanted to blame Mack and May for not carrying Fitz immediately to her. She could've saved him. She could've helped. She could've prevented his death. But she couldn't. She couldn't blame anyone but herself. They vowed never to leave eachother's side. They have even made the vows of their wedding. But a stupid pile of cement and metal torn them apart. Both Fitzsimmons AND Simmons herself.

She felt lost. Incomplete. Crippled.

Pictures flashed in her head - first mission; hitting Fitz with a fire extinguisher to knock him out and jump off to her death after being infected with an alien virus; being trapped in the bottom of the ocean; Fitz's confession; 9 days of coma; an imaginary restart button on their relationship; Maveth; recording messages for Fitz; him trying to get her astronaut friend back from Maveth to earth; their kiss; Bukarest; their wedding.

So many memories. So much pain.

Nothing can save him now, she thought in sadness.

Damn these time-travelling missions...

wait...

It occured to her. Fitz took the long way to the future. He is supposed to be somewhere in deep space, frozen in cryogenic sleep, unaware of anything and everything that has happened after they beat AIDA and went to that cursed diner.

She can find him. They can be together!

She CAN find him.

She must.
